Anyone who pays tithing has a hand in John Dehlin's excommunication.
Vote with your $, folks. Or with your feet. Walking away is liberating. There is no good reason to support this church if you value free speech.
Whether you agree with John Dehlin or not, any reasonable, thinking person ought to admit that excommunicating a guy because of a podcast is a pretty cowardly thing to do.That which may be asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence. -C. Hitchens

Actually the church is doing Dehlin a great favor by excommunicating him... Just think of all the podcasts he can create after his excommunication. He can create a whole series of podcasts on the excommunication process and invite his friend, Kate, on the show and really say want he always wanted without worrying about being excommunicated (again). And look at all the free PR Dehlin is getting. The next you know he may be sitting down with Jimmy Fallon, the girls on the View and maybe even Oprah, herself. He may continue paying tithing to church just as a way to say "Thanks for all the fish!"Originally posted by SoonerCoug View PostAnyone who pays tithing has a hand in John Dehlin's excommunication.

And of course when the ride on the excommunication gravy train has reached its end, JD can tearfully come back to the church, churning out podcasts, t-shirts, keychains, and scripture tote bags. And when the revenue dries up from the prodigal son narrative, he can rinse and repeat.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostActually the church is doing Dehlin a great favor by excommunicating him... Yep, he is already getting face time on the national news and he hasn't even been excommunicated yet...Originally posted by Harry Tic View PostAnd of course when the ride on the excommunication gravy train has reached its end, JD can tearfully come back to the church, churning out podcasts, t-shirts, keychains, and scripture tote bags. I'm afraid to see what terrible decisions John Dehlin starts making after he actually loses the gift of the Holy Ghost!Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

John has posted on FB that he has received the letter and will announce/discuss the decision in a podcast later today. Milkin' it!
FTR, I don't think excommunication is a cowardly act, although from the little I know I think it's a poor one.

If he were smart he'd offer it as a subscription service..."pay $1.99 to find out my fate.""They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Maybe he'll have a hat ceremony like on signing day...
(Sits down at table, hats on the table include: LDS, Apostate, Westboro Baptists, Unitarian)
"My current status with the LDS Church is..." (picks up the LDS hat, fakes putting it on, picks up Apostate hat)
"APOSTATE!" (Confetti cannon goes off)"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.

Now Uncle Ted, if there's one thing I've learned from official excommunication letters, it's that excommunicated Mormons no longer enjoy the privledge of paying tithes and offering. Brother John may wish to continue paying tithing but, in actuality, he cannot.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostHe may continue paying tithing to church just as a way to say "Thanks for all the fish!"“Not the victory but the action.
