Maybe I heard wrong. It was a boring video.

      • My sister and brother-in-law went to go see the movie tonight. They couldn't get tickets, as it was sold out. They bought two of the remaining ten tickets for tomorrow night.

        • I wonder if the point is to bury that BBC documentary of th same name? I kind of think so. Did someone already suggest that in this way too long thread?

Holland actually stated this, but also mentioned test audiences.

It fits the definition of propaganda spot on.

So, my theater looked to be sold out, or close to it. People saving massive blocks of seats like it was sacrament meeting or something. Like, seriously three or four rows.

The movie itself was, in my mind, boring when viewed as a movie. The stories were fine, the people were fine, but there was nothing noteworthy about these people as Mormons per se. I found myself asking through the whole movie, "well, that's nice, but what does this have to do with the fact that he/she is Mormon?" Maybe that was the point. I did find the Lt. Halvorsen story interesting, but there is nothing at all that would tell me anything about what Mormon's believe. Once they mentioned the BOM. You could almost literally call it "Meet the Methodists" and most people couldn't tell the difference.

From a church standpoint, I can't figure out who the audience is. The narrative is a proselytizing setup. Implicitly deal with racism and women's issues, then hit them with a missionary narrative. So I don't buy Holland's claim that this isn't for proselytizing.

            • My wife and oldest daughter saw it tonight and loved it. I wasn't surprised by their reaction as they are really into church stuff.

Is this some sort of ex-mo atoning sacrifice or something?

I will wait to watch when it comes on BYUtv between sessions of conference, during a game rain delay or something of the like. I also appreciate Niku for his sacrifice of not only in helping finance the making of this movie (saving our tithing dollars to build malls that are closed on Sundays in Utah) but also of his valuable time to go and report that is just a movie (rated PG for "implicit proselytizing") about mormons that could be literally methodists.

My wife actually liked it. She said it reminded her of all the things she likes about being Mormon. This is not surprising because there was nothing particularly Mormon about the movie, but the people in it were likable.

So are Mormons any nicer or more likable than other people?

Maybe all the weird shit that Mormons "believe" makes them really nice/likable or maybe all the assholes opt out.

You mean the Utah Standard? It didn't seem out of place in context.

I did laugh at the idea that Times Square is a good place to get opinions from a huge variety of people. Times Square is an excellent place to get the opinions of tourists to Times Square. Likely no opinions from any NYC resident were actually represented.

                            • I will not be seeing this, no desire at all. I've met all the Mormons. Very interesting that people that believe in no afterlife would waste 2 hours of thier only life watching a propaganda movie about something they do not wish to be a part of. Life is precious, people.

                              • So effing glad I'm in St. Louis. Wife and kids went to see this last night. And they would have dragged me along if I was home.

Instead I was pounding ribs at Pappy's while they were at the movie. #WINNING
