That's not uncommon, especially for people who own small businesses. I have not heard or read anything that says that's frowned on.

My bishop doesn't even know who has paid or not until I tell him. And if you say that's a full tithe, fine. No questions from us.

Incidentally, based on what I know about the income levels of people here, most people who pay do it on gross. Except me.

I wavered back and forth for a while but decided to pay on net (actually a hybrid) for a number of reasons. One of those reasons is that I like money. The others mostly have to do with progressive tax structures and European socialism.

        Yeah, I overthought the issue.

Here is my thought. I just pay on cash I received or my increase. Its easier for a simple mind like mine to figure out.

I always paid on gross because I was afraid I would get to judgement and God would tell me I was a few thousand bucks short. I didn't want to risk my salvation for a few bucks. Now I don't pay and my salary has gone up every years since then. God helps those who help themselves!

So, when you pay on net, do you claim zero dependents and make huge 401k contributions to help lower your tithing?

Not being interested in many of the machinations of the Church, I haven't really thought about tithing settlement other than to show up (or not show up if I'm out of town the weekend of appointments). Now I'm wondering why it is we have this formal interview process. Can someone help me out here?

The cynical side of me believes that if you have to see someone face to face and state your status you are more likely to pay. I don't like tithing settlement or ppi's and so I won't go. Back when I was a part payer I had to declare that in front of my kids and it left such a bad taste in my mouth I won't go anymore. The ppi dislike comes from having a 25 year old kid asking me about my family and if he can do anything to help. This is my rant for the day, thanks for listening.

Cynics will tell you that it is a good way to keep the chilluns in line and indoctrinate them to fork over cash at a very young age. As RC has pointed out, a face to face meeting is also more likely to yield better payouts.

Traditionalists will tell you that it is a time to counsel with your judge in Israel, teach children by example, declare your worthiness for at least a portion of your temple recommend, and ensure that proper and accurate records are kept at the Church.

Pragmatists will tell you that all of these things have merit and validity, but also point out that if you are not a full tithe payer, you are not in compliance with the terms of your TR and thus a group setting is inappropriate for such disclosure.

Truthfully, I find tithing settlement to be mostly pointless, but I usually go. This year I couldn't think of a great reason to go and I am no worse for the wear. As long as I keep paying my full tithe, I don't think the Bishop or the Church cares much, either. If I need to counsel with my Bishop, I will do that on my own.

At the core of the gospel as Mormons understand it is the idea of returning and reporting. Tithing settlement is no different. I liked DDD summation. I guess I fall somewhere in the pragmatic traditionalist camp.

I attend every year. Tithing is important to me. Regardless of whether I am a full tithe payer or not I'll go. It's like the repentance process in a way. Even though the Lord knows if we're full tithe payers or not we're still supposed to let our leaders know. I do think there is something important in that confession and being accountable.

My wife and I ditched our appointed tithing settlement time last sunday. I go every year (and we will go this year), but I really don't see the purpose. I mean, don't we declare our status when we have a temple reccomend interview? Yeah, I know those are only every two years now, but still...

Seriously. I hate it when people are concerned about my family and offer to help with anything if I need it. Especially if they are younger than me. The nerve of some people.

The idea that some kid without kids could offer me some advice on what my family needed is a joke. I have my friends and family and that is who I would turn to for help. They are playing their part in the quorum presidency and i understand that but really it's such a waste of time for me.

How does that work? Do you buy stock and then just give it to the church at the end of year for example. Lets say you make 120k a year which translates into 1k of tithing every month.

Do you buy stock with that 1k and if it loses value still give the stock over to the church?

What happens if it gains value??

Do the hybrid approach that I did this year. Just tell your Bishop during the block that you are in compliance (or whatever the case may be) and be done with it.

The other thing about T-Sett....it is always in December. Why would the Bishop want to spend every waking hour of every Sunday in December at the Chapel instead of at home with his family? I don't require his services, so why add to his workload?
