In my Provo "heart-of-mormonism" ward, the OW movement has been mentioned numerous times in priesthood, RS, and SS discussions. Furthermore, it (both the OW activities over the last year and the recent Kate Kelly news) has been all over the front page of the newspapers, on the radio, on TV broadcasts, and in social media here in Utah. Our ward RS Pres references it frequently. Anyone who claims that this is something that only a tiny handful of Mormons are even aware of is simply wrong.

I too have been surprised at the reaction over the last few days. I know several people in my ward (not a majority by any stretch, but a significant number) who are quite upset. One woman told me she might be done. A lot of these folks may not fully support OW or agree with their tactics thus far, but are sympathetic to the concept of gender inequality in the church and are shocked by the threat of excommunication.
I'm still proselytizing - I will let you know what results I get. On Trax now. Seems like nobody cares.

Edit: totally dig the public transport. Took frontrunner up here, goofed off at city creek, now off to the airport. Totally easy.

Now that blows my mind. Shocked? Really?

IIRC, this was before she moved to Utah.
Perhaps there is something that would tie this all together but this NY times article seems to reference a letter written by the SP in May:

          http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/12/us...l?src=twr&_r=2

Perhaps the letter was written after they had met, but then this whole narrative doesn't really jive well with Kate supposedly being blindsided by receiving the letter.

Perhaps there are different levels of knowledge in and outside of Utah, where this is receiving media attention and current LDS matters are more a topic of daily conversation.

I made a few comments yesterday about Kate Kelly and literally none of the people had a clue who I was referencing. I would tell them it was the Ordain Women lady, and the typical response was "Oh I saw something about that on facebook". While I think many of the people I talked to would be sympathetic or even interested in the cause, if you aren't in Utah (or maybe Texas it seems from CS) I am not sure that fringe elements of Mormonism are really on the general member of the church's radar.

Maybe that is not the best word. Upset. Disturbed. Depressed. Take your pick.

Yeah, I think it is one of those cases where you would be more likely to be aware of it if you lived in Utah due to local media coverage.

Very well could be. But underwhelming response on the train.

Same here in my area of NorCal. A few people are aware of it, but it doesn't seem to be a very big deal at all.

Yep. True story. All I'm saying is that the concept of inequality in the gospel is not a new one. Entire populations have been left out in the past as well. So I find it funny when people say "What would Jesus do?"

Well - one thing Jesus would do is he would make it so that only those of the house of Levi can hold the priesthood. Well...at least for a while.

Not to mention the mild case of discrimination against, say, the Canaanites (kill them all, and their animals, too).

Sometimes killing whole communities is a better way to show them the pure love of Christ than bringing them baked goods.

You know what else Jesus did? He worked through female prophets. And not once in the new testament, old testament, or book of mormon did he indicate that the priesthood (by current LDS definitions) was a requirement for healing or performing miracles or holding leadership positions.

By the way, Jesus apparently supported slavery also. You might want to rethink your line of reasoning here.

Why? I don't think it changes anything.

I don't think the priesthood is a requirement for healing or performing miracles. Well - let me take that back. I don't think priesthood keys or authority are needed. I'd have to think a little harder before going beyond that.

I don't have a problem with women receiving revelation and/or following the spirit and bearing testimony or even providing some leadership - though I seem to recall women being more prophet and less leader in the church, but who knows why that is or even if I'm understanding what I read correctly. The killing, the slavery, etc. Yep. It all happened on God's watch and He even advocated some of it.

I think that's my whole point. Perhaps you missed it. That stuff doesn't bother me.
