So this email went out on Wednesday from our EQ president. Some background. 1. For whatever reason, our stake has taken responsibility for putting this production of the nativity, (complete with live animals, some real beards!, and an actual infant) on for a couple weeks every December. It gets pretty advertised around the valley and is very well attended. Despite being promoted over several stakes, as far as I know, ours is the only one that helps put it on. 2. They just reorganized the boundaries of the wards in our stake. Our ward went from one of the largest to one of the smallest to anticipate future development within our boundaries. We probably have 30 elders currently. With that, here's the email:

I can't remember the final outcome as I was released from primary to serve in Scouts.

Is this the same nativity that has been going on for several years? We went to one in 2007 that was just north of Sahara Ave (if I remember right). It was very impressive (with all the live animals, etc.) and packed full of people. It was almost a mini-mormon pageant. If so that has to be a load of work to pull off. Kudos to your stake and ward for taking that on. I know my family appreciated it.

Brethren of the XXXXXXX Ward. We have been asked to take on a project with the nativity that is going to require a commitment and sacrifice from just about all of us.


They have asked that our ward provide nightly security from December 1st until December 14th. This security assignment is from 7pm to 7am on the weekdays and 24 hours on the weekends minus the block of time we are in church and the times that performances are going on.


Security consists of sitting in your car facing the set area and observing to make sure things are good. They would also like us to occasionally get out and walk the set during each shift to more closely verify there are no problems. We are not to endanger ourselves and should contact the police if needed.


What we are asking is that all who can notify us of your availability to serve. I've been told in the past people often took 4 hour shift on multiple nights and that others preferred to sign up for an entire night to just get it done at once. Ideally we would like to have two brothers or a father and son covering at all times to avoid as much as possible anyone being there alone.


If each of us volunteer, it should not be a heavy burden on one or a few individuals, so please try to find a time over the two week period that you can help. If you can cover the same time over multiple days that would also be a huge help.


The other day I was listening to a story about the pioneers and particularly the handcart companies that crossed over in the winter. They made great sacrifices so that we could enjoy the gospel today. This is an opportunity for us on some level to do the same for others. The nativity serves to bring the message of Jesus Christ and his Gospel to thousand of members and non-members. Please help us as a ward do our part in supporting this missionary effort.

Someone needs to tell this individual the rest of the pioneer story about how they were told not to leave winter quarters so late in the season and about Brother Brigham's steam engine.

We had something like this before... i.e. "we need you to be a free security guard but don't bring your guns!" No guns, WTF?!?

We ended up camping with the scouts at the area that was to be guarded (the church) on the back lawn. We even had a fire. That didn't go over too well with the stake president, however. Of course, the elders in the other ward had a tail gate party including a smoker, a directv and flat screen TV, and an all night poker game so it could have been worse.

Sometime in the last few years, it got moved, and is new held at the new Opportunity Village. If it hadn't been, there's a good chance it might have been me desperately trying to fulfill a ridiculous directive from the stake.

Breaking records, sharing faith: 1,000 gather for live Nativity in Provo

I had to take a 7 p.m to 7 a.m. "fire watch" shift a few years ago for our ward's girls camp in Lee's Canyon. Me and another dude took shifts watching the mountain to make sure the mountain didn't go up in flames.

Ha. I was supposed to do this a few months ago. It was a 9pm to 6am shift. It was dark when I drove up there and I couldn't find the place I was supposed to be. After driving around for about 30 mins, I left. Too bad for the guy I was supposed to meet, as I had snacks and several movies loaded on my iPad. There were no fires, and nobody died, FTR.
