In addition to the actual beliefs of the founders that UsUc identified, the founders had a pretty narrow view of what free exercise protected: essentially Lockean freedom of conscience (the right to believe what you want to believe and not have the government dictate your religious beliefs). Oaks' pleas for religionists to be able to do whatever they want if it follows the dictates of their religion is contrary to this understanding. Governments cannot dictate belief or nonbelief, worship or not worship, but they can certainly forbid general actions that may encroach on religious beliefs.

This is a great thread for many reasons.

I also think Solon is great, even though at the start of the board he and I disagreed vehemently on if Utah finishing #2 was the greatest sports accomplishment in the history of the state of Utah. I am envious of his intellect, and ability to use it.
