Pipe smoking looks cool and they have different aromas. But it also looks like a pain in the ass. You need pipe cleaners and a bunch of other stuff that ruins the coolness factor. No way for me."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Go figure. You like Beer and Hawaiian poi.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostNo, there is only one. Get that fruity shit out of here.
But you don't like Tahitian poi or spiced rum. No accounting for your lack of taste."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Little surprised at the level of beer discussion here. Would have thought some posters would have had better knowledge, if not opinions.
The reason why beer is more filling is due to basically three things: portion size, calories, and carbonation.
Whether you have a mixed drink, a glass of wine, or a pint of beer, the amount of alcohol is about the same, but you're drinking 5-8 ounces of liquid for the mixed drink, about 5 ounces for a glass of wine, but 16 ounces for a pint of beer (12 for a bottle or a can). That's a significant difference in volume. Additionally the carbonation of beer, which expands somewhat in your stomach. Combined with the substantive nature of the malt (liquid bread anyone?) and you have a significantly more filling drink.
Then you have the calories on top of that. A glass of red wine will usually be about 125 calories (~25 calories an ounce) an average martini the same, maybe a little more depending on how strong it is, but only the lightest beers have that few calories. Depending on the style of beer you'll range from around 150-240 calories for 12 ounces, more if you're drinking a barley wine or one of the high alcohol content Belgian styles.
So, to sum up beer is more filling because you're drinking a higher volume, it has more calories, and the carbonation expands slightly in your stomach.Last edited by pellegrino; 01-28-2014, 04:27 PM.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

On a calorie per ounce basis, wine and beer are about equal. Only wine doesn't make you feel full, so you can probably drink more wine (and hence more calories) before feeling full. And if you're not careful, drinking calories will make you fat.Originally posted by pellegrino View PostLittle surprised at the level of beer discussion here. True. However, I have seen a "Bubba" down a six pack or two in one sitting, whereas a lady will often nurse a single glass of win all night. The nature of the drink tends to induce overconsumption.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostOn a calorie per ounce basis, wine and beer are about equal. Pelligrino nicely summed up the problem with beer consumption. Shots of vodka tend to be less filling.
And it depends upon which grape is used. A Chardonnay has less residual sugar and hence fewer calories."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Don't compare a Bubba with a lady; compare a Bubba with a Bubba. If the same lady in your example is drinking beer, she's going to nurse a single bottle all night and probably never finish it. If Bubba is drinking wine, he's going to finish a bottle and then another. In short, it's not the type of alcohol, it's the amount. Staying away from one type or another will not have nearly the caloric impact as simply ensuring that alcohol is consumed in moderation, regardless of the alcohol type.Originally posted by Topper View PostTrue. Problem with beer? I identified no such thing. I merely explained the reasons why it is more filling. Your opinion (which is disappointing) is that this is a problem.Originally posted by Topper View PostTrue. Well a Bubba won't drink wine. A lady might drink a beer but usually she won't. A guy who drinks a wine might have a second, unless he's on vacation, he'll rarely do more. But Bubba at a football party will drink more than a horse. There is a certain ambiance with drinks. But Pelligrino aptly describes the problem with beer, on top of the taste issue.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostDon't compare a Bubba with a lady; compare a Bubba with a Bubba. A drink that bloats your belly is not a problem to you? Between the flatulence created and the need to urinate, as well as rancid taste, it's a great drink."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

I don't know much about the alcohol content of beer vs. wine, but based on drinking both I feel like wine has more. You see people drink much higher quantities of beer than wine because it takes more to get drunk. At least that's my experience. Thus the calorie consumption is higher for beer drinkers. That's my guess at the beer gut theory.Last edited by MarkGrace; 01-28-2014, 05:03 PM.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Ounce per ounce, yes, but the fact is that when you drink beer you generally drink more fluid ounces than wine or mixed drinks, so you drink more calories.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostOn a calorie per ounce basis, wine and beer are about equal.
