  • Something funny that happened this weekend. Missionary related.

Each of us that has served a mission has some funny stories to tell others about our experiences in the field. Here's one that I'm sure will be shared by two young men currently serving in Utah County.

Many of you may know that I married my partner in California in September. We held a small reception, at a friend's home in Eagle Mountain, this past Saturday night. Lots of our friends and a few family members came to support us. Anyway...during the reception, the LDS missionaries came to the door as they have been working with our friend to find new potential contacts. She is a great lady and a wonderful member of the church, who is always eager to help the missionaries. Obviously she supports us as well, but she is definitely a loyal member of the church. The door was open, but the missionaries knocked on it anyway, and stood there staring at a portrait of the two of us at our wedding. I can't imagine what they were thinking.

Our friend's 15 year old son went to the door, explained what was going on, and invited the missionaries to come in and have some cake. The poor elders clearly weren't quite sure what to do, but they politely declined, and said, "I guess this isn't a very good time then. We'll stop by again in a day or two".

As the Father of 2 currently-serving missionaries, I fully support missionary work and appreciate all their efforts. I'm just glad that the two of them will have another funny story to tell their mission president as well as friends and family back home.

How come you waited so long for the reception?

Congratulations on the nuptials. I'd love to read the missionaries' letter home this week. I think you've posted about this before but I'm too lazy to go back: are your kids, particularly the currently serving missionaries, supportive of you and your new spouse? ("None of your beeswax" is an acceptable response here.)

They were using video services to instantly upload the events for others to watch. They needed to find a friend whose internet service provider was reliable, provides blazing fast upload and download speeds (i.e. has a concerned and forward thinking provider who deploys fiber all the way to the premises) and never caps for data usage. After a thorough and exhaustive search they found a friend who lives in Eagle Mountain where the independent provider has deployed such a robust network.

I am touched that I could help these two in some way! Here is to a supersized chocolate soft serve in Shoshone, ID!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

My son got married in October, and this was as soon as we could most of our friends and family together. Of course I only had one of my 8 siblings attend, but I understand it's difficult for them to deal with. Basically the date worked out the best.

Thank you Goatnapper...I am planning on taking him to the Magic Valley sometime in the next few weeks. He has never been there.

None of your beeswax. No, I'm just kidding, and thank you for asking. My kids all know I am gay, but I have not told them that I am married. The missionaries do not need to spend their time worrying about this situation back home, and I see no need to tell the younger kids. My married son knows, and accepts it, but it is not easy for him.

It's been an incredibly busy year for me, but I hope to find time to post more regularly.

Congrats. I can appreciate the courage it's taken for you to set things right in your life. Did Pepper Saltzman do your wedding?
