Pretty good talk, however she makes some grand exaggerations. The most shocking element of the talk is that she uses the "Mormon woman in General Conference" voice many, many times."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Either she is very dumb or willfully misrepresenting Mormon belief to make a point.Originally posted by Moliere View Posthttp://www.ted.com/talks/chelsea_shi...side_my_church

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Yeah, it's a failing of most progmos to overgeneralize some teachings and doctrines. I think she could have made just as good of a point in regards to patriarchy without resorting to overgeneralized patriarchal teachings/doctrines...but her crowd for the talk isn't the active Mormon crowd and maybe she knew that.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostEither she is very dumb or willfully misrepresenting Mormon belief to make a point."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. She is certainly not stupid. Also, what is she willfully misrepresenting about Mormon belief?Originally posted by myboynoah View PostEither she is very dumb or willfully misrepresenting Mormon belief to make a point. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

I made it to the 00:58 point, at which point she had just made three willful misrepresentations.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostShe is certainly not stupid. There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

I don't think mpfunk is disputing that point, I just think he is taking the Topper approach of not doing any independent research and just asking everyone to explain everything to him.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI made it to the 00:58 point, at which point she had just made three willful misrepresentations.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. No I've read the transcript. I'm not seeing the willful misrepresentations.Originally posted by falafel View PostI don't think mpfunk is disputing that point, I just think he is taking the Topper approach of not doing any independent research and just asking everyone to explain everything to him.As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

For starters, she said that parents tell their children they would rather have them come home dead from a mission instead of having sinned (and I assume she meant come home early). She also said you can't go to the celestial kingdom if you don't wear sleeves. I'm pretty sure that most Mormons would disagree that those are hard and fast doctrines. Sure that stuff is preached from time to time, but it is certainly not widespread nor is it common belief.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostNo I've read the transcript. It's too bad, too...since the end of the talk she makes some very good points."Discipleship is not a spectator sport.
