That's a good talk. I just hope she was the last speaker as I'd hate to be slotted after her....especially if I had some mundane topic."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I'd like to see a link to this stat:
I realize it's a problem and if it happens one time that is one time too many and unacceptable, but it sounds like she may have pulled that one out of her ass.Almost half of the population of homeless teens in Utah are gay and lesbian
children who have been expelled from their LDS homes after having told their
parents about their sexual orientation.I'm like LeBron James.

That seems high to me also. But here's an article:Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI'd like to see a link to this stat:

I couldn't find any reference stating where they came up with that number. It is based on a USU graduate student's research, however.Of Utah's estimated 5,000 homeless youths, about 40 percent identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
And of that 40 percent, 50 percent say they were raised in families who were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Last edited by Northwestcoug; 03-31-2014, 02:08 PM."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. So that's 1000 homeless gay/lesbian youths on the streets of Ogden? That's just about a full HS.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostThat seems high to me also. But here's an article:

So based on that study, closer to 20%. Way too many, but probably not near half. Perhaps to her, that is "almost half".Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostThat seems high to me also. But here's an article:

The Ogden part that was in the quote was from the paper. Fixed above.Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostSo that's 1000 homeless gay/lesbian youths on the streets of Ogden? Yep. Probably conflating the 40% total with 50% identifying as being raised LDS.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostSo based on that study, closer to 20%. When a person makes up stats like that just for shock value, I think it severely damages the credibility. Too bad, because if she had said 20% of homeless teens are gay or lesbians who have been kicked out of their LDS homes, that would have been plenty shocking.
Perhaps she is aware of some other study that would lend credibility to that comment.
(edit) you could be right, NWC, but to err in her own favor like that really makes me question whether she deserves that benefit of the doubt.Last edited by smokymountainrain; 03-31-2014, 02:15 PM.I'm like LeBron James.

Shall we subject seminary teachers and run-of-the-mill Sacrament Meeting speakers to the same scrutiny? How about Sunday School teachers? How about any number of GAs?Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI'd like to see a link to this stat:

I've heard bat-shit crazy of the conservative variety on a routine basis at church and it is inevitably overlooked.
Could this be just the tiniest bit of the bias and alienating behavior that she references? We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

I did not see anywhere in the report that said they had been expelled from their homes either.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostWhen a person makes up stats like that just for shock value, I think it severely damages the credibility. (edit) you could be right, NWC, but to err in her own favor like that really makes me question whether she deserves that benefit of the doubt. One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.
Woot
I believe religion has much inherent good and has born many good fruits.

Mrs. Funk, when you see her next, tell her that it was a beautiful talk.Originally posted by Mrs. Funk View PostI wasn't there, but I can confirm she gave the talk. I know her IRL.
As soon as she said "I am a supporter of ordaining women," I could guarantee our bishop would have jumped up and put an end to the talk there and then.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThat would be like a nuclear bomb in most wards."Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism" - Joseph Smith Jr.

I couldn't find any reference stating where they came up with that number. It is based on a USU graduate student's research, however. So maybe Utah eliminated a good share of its chronic homelessness by simply not counting the gays/lesbians?Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostSo that's 1000 homeless gay/lesbian youths on the streets of Ogden?
