I have no opinion on whether women should attend the meeting or not, unless they are taking the place of intended audience members.

I also don't have a problem with the Ordain Women organization. Its not something I care a whole lot about, but I'm not offended in the slightest by those who do. I am not aware of any doctrinal basis for not ordaining women and would not be surprised if it was just a relic of historical sexism. I also wouldn't be surprised if the opposite were true either.

I guess I just don't see the connection between the Ordain Women movement and attending priesthood meeting. Seems like there is a better way to get the message across than by taking tickets that would normally go to the intended audience of the meeting. Its not like there is anything said in the meeting that women can't hear. Now they can even hear it live.
It is kind of like the priesthood ban for blacks over again. The revelation to lift that ban would have never came about if there wasn't a significant number of people protesting it (or, like it the case of the WoW, the Prophet's wife complaining about it). The OW group is raising awareness by leveraging free publicity. It is not like the church teaches that early women in the church gave priesthood blessings in the YW's lesson manuals.

Caller: Since we’re getting into the 21st century, President Hinckley, what is the chance that women may hold a priesthood in the Mormon church?

Gordon B. Hinckley: Well, they don’t hold the priesthood at the present time. It would take another revelation to bring that about. I don’t anticipate it. The women of the church are not complaining about it. They have their own organization, a very strong organization, 4 million plus members. I don’t know of another women’s organization in the world which does so much for women as does that, as this church has. They’re happy. They sit on boards and governance in the church. I don’t hear any complaints about it.
      (
      Larry King Live
      Interview, September 1998)

So as long as the women are happy there is no reason to ask for a revelation to lift the
priesthood ban on women, I guess.

At what point in the session did they take this picture? I've noticed them filling empty seats with standbys well after the session started.

                • It's a ruse. The church doesn't employ women because it encourages them to leave the home.

                  • Might there be some credibility to this letter's "thus sayeth the Lord" approach, since a reasoned argument based on precedent, scripture, logic, etc. would likely fall flat (due to lack of sources) or otherwise open a legitimate debate (making it possible for the Church's position to be discredited)?

Generally, I'm not a big fan of reforming the organizational side of the Church (what kind of impact a person can have at the local level remains important to me, though). They're really not that interested in what the rank-and-file, or even the snooty intellectuals think. The Church is run by a bunch of older guys who think they talk to God, and who receive lots and lots of deference & obedience. Is there really any reason to think that they're open to suggestions from the masses?

I think the letter is lame, but I think it's a justifiable response from the Church. It does lose some ooomph, though, considering that it comes from the PR department rather than someone more closely connected to the "Prophets, Seers, Revelators" that are in charge, but I suppose those guys can't write all the letters.

I mean, what if Monson gets up in a couple of weeks and says, "I asked God about ordaining women; he said NO."? That would pretty much end the intrigue for now, right?
But I'll bet money Monson doesn't get up and say that. Far too direct for General Conference. Instead, we'll get more PR releases.

I think that, at some point, the OW movement will realize that Church members are more like employees than stockholders.
I know that ideally "they ARE the Church", but in fact they aren't.
                    None of us is.

This is not directed to you as I didn't hear you say this. I find a comment that the women who believe in the current status quo are essentially brain washed dupes to be as offensive as my comment about the professor. A difference of opinion can come from two well informed thoughtful people. Thus I can see both points of view. If the church were a democracy I would vote women could have the Priesthood. It wouldn't be high on my priority list because it isn't high on the priority list of the women I associate with. If it is with women with whom others associate with I can accept why it would be important to them.
Nobody said that, but feel free to be offended anyway.

LOL, now you know what I have heard people say. I think you are wasting your time on this board. You would be a very valuable link between the First Presidency and God. Your powers of knowing all are wasted here.

I thought you were talking about posts here since there was a comment a few posts prior to yours about the status quo. But if you were just rambling about something else, then disregard my comment.
