Two streetball hustlers missionaries fellowshipping some local investigators....using a hidden camera

A video posted to YouTube shows two LDS missionaries playing ball with a group of men in Henderson, Texas. During warm up, they're missing shots and generally looking like pretty miserable players. But things quickly change when Elder Cole Payne, originally from Lindon, Utah, lands a solid dunk on one of the players. Then follows the amazed shouts from those watching.

We played in a city tournament against local Guatemalans. I'm no good at b-ball, but the talent disparity was about the same between us and the Guatemalans as it is in this video between the Elders and those brothers.

Anyone else play ball in missionary clothes on their mission? In Korea, you don't see a lot of bball, but occasionally the kids are playing it on an elementary school playground. Usually dirt fields with a hoop with no net. At least that's how it was 20 years ago. Once we stopped and shot with the kids. A crowd gathered. Crowds always gather in Seoul Korea. I did a few dunks and a crowd of 100 kids shouted and cheered for me like I was a rock star. Good times.

We played a semi-pro (that's how they described themselves, I have no idea what that really meant) team in England once. It was just a group of guys from our zone, though we did have a JC and a D1 player on our team. We beat them by 30. They asked us how long we had been playing together. We told them this was the first time. They were very depressed.

I did. Not that I was any good, but my second summer on the mish there was a park that had a few courts. My companion was a JuCo player and we would stop by and play 2-3 times a week. He of course was the star of the show. We made a lot of friends and taught about a dozen discussions from it, so we justified it as a good use of our resources. Good times.

Not in missionary clothes but we would go down to the U. of Winnipeg and play on p-day. There was a Tebbs kid out of Vegas or SoCal who was a good player and another 6' 7" kid out of Florida who actually ended up getting a schollie to come back and play at the university after the coach came down and watched us play one day.

Missionary Basketball Video - I gave Elder Payne a ride in our car yesterday

If I've said it once, I'll say it a hundred times he is a good kid. We had a prearranged meeting yesterday (to provide service to a non-member) and we drove he and his companion there.

With regards to his reaction to this whole viral video thing, he expresses a mixture of surprise, amusement and embarrassment. I told him he was on NPR, USAToday, XBOX, KSL, and how fast the video grew from a couple hundred Monday Night to a couple thousand Tuesday night to hundreds of thousands Tuesday afternoon his reaction was "No way. (embarrassed laugh) No way."

When they were out and about and got something from the store one of the clerks said, "Hey have you guys seen that Mormon Missionary Basketball video yet?" They had a good laugh.

He also said that he did NOT miss on purpose. "Actually I was trying to make those." Not warmed up.

I asked him about the hoop height and he said it was no regulation "Probably about 9 1/2 feet"

He was very quick to talk about baptizing the daughter, and his heart is in the right place. Then on a 105 degree Dallas afternoon he and his companion helped load my truck with a donated bed/mattress set for a poverty stricken non-member family.

I asked him if it was ok to talk about this and he said yes.

I fully expect to see a trend of youtube videos showing missionaries doing athletic activities in shirt/tie; in my experience, no group is quicker to parrot the successes of others than a group full-time missionaries. I also expect a letter from the FP saying missionaries should not be spending their time filming videos but spreading the gospel.

My Grandfathers brother was a missionary in Australia in 1930-33, and he wrote of an experience he had one night, and he called it "The Night I played Basketball with the Lord."

As a 6'4" kid from Oregon, Lester played basketball at Eastern Oregon University, but took time to serve a mission. On his mission he found that basketball was a great way to interact with the local community, and he initiated several "demonstrations" on the game, where he would play a half, and talk about various basketball skills and strategy. One night he organized such an event at a local high school and 500 people showed up to the game and skills exhibition. After showing how the game should be played 5 on 5, he went into his routine of skills demo which included a shooting exhibition. During the shooting he said that the crowd cheered loudly at every shot, and he didn't miss a one as he was talking and shooting. He went to the top of the key and made a couple, and then went to half court to talk some more, and the crowd shouted for him to shoot. As his demo was basically over, he took a shot from half court to appease the crowd and finish, but he made the shot and the crowd went wild. Then the crowd wanted him to shoot from the opposite free throw line. He walked over, measured himself, and hoisted a 3/4 court shot that swished. The crowd went wild, and he walked out of the gym.


Uncle Lester was so moved by the experience that it became a family legend, and of course he wrote a short story about the night.
