  • OK... I guess the cat's out of the bag. Time for a full confession.

I'm a 23 year old woman who has been on an Internet Mission for the past 13 months posting under the name clackamascoug. Before me was an Elder, and before him was another Elder who created this the clackamscoug account in 2009. We have been part of a "pilot program" collecting data for review, with our reports sent directly to the twelve, specifically Pres. Packer. I've alluded to this calling more than a dozen times in the previous months, and if feels good that our information has proved valuable in determining the course of missionary work in this new day of social media.

If any of you know of young people who could also serve as missionaries such as we have done under the guise of screen names, please refer them to me, and we can help launch this new era of missionary work to greater heights than ever before. I'll be transfered home in the coming weeks, and want to thank each of you for making me feel welcome, and almost appreciated. Till then, I'll try and help each of you hold to the iron rod by reminding you that being true to the Church is more important than being true to yourself.

    • I finally thought of something redeeming about tracting: it's decent exercise.

Missionaries are going to get fat with their new sedentary lifestyle.

      • I'm not sure how comfortable I'm going to be "friending" elders on facebook.

        • I really enjoyed the broadcast. I felt the spirit, and am looking forward to doing a little more.

We then had a baptism right after the meeting. And that was great also.

          Today was good.

          • Why do I continue to attend these things!?!?
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

            • I can't wait for the "we met on the Internet or our missions" stories. Trying to think of what would kick that up to the trifecta.

                • In hearing there is going to be a much stronger focus on internet mission work, I am mulling over whether or not this will be better or worse for some of these socially backwards young people that go out on missions.

I think one downside is that many of them will be able to retreat into a familiar shell rather than being forced to learn some social skills.

It is all good... L. Tom and the GAs are monitoring everything:

Mormon chapels, which have typically been locked during the week, will now be open so that missionaries can go there to give tours to interested outsiders and to use Wi-Fi to receive and contact interested investigators, to confirm appointments, access mormon.org, Facebook, blogs, emails and text messages.

"Access to the Internet by missionaries will be phased over several months and into the next years," Perry said.

Missionaries’ use of the Internet will be closely controlled, he said. "Safety is paramount. We will monitor missionaries online to help them remain safe in all they do."

Speaking earlier in the day to the new mission presidents, Mormon leaders said that "missionary use of the Internet and digital devices such as iPads will begin in phases and only in designated missions for the rest of this year," according to an LDS news release. "The church anticipates these tools will be available to missionaries throughout the world sometime next year."
