I had to sit through Ward Council yesterday morning and the bishop mentioned this almost as an afterthought. The only people encouraged to attend were axillary presidents and their wives.

We are going to get called to Missouri and I'll be on a cruise ship in the Inside Passage. Left behind because I went on vacation. What a way to go...Originally posted by clackamascoug View PostThe high council member in our Sacrament Meeting made such a huge deal out of it, and sold it so well, I think I'm going to go. He made is sound like it would be course changing, and you'd want to be present for the historicity of the moment. I'm sure I'll be let down, but it'll be in a meeting like this when we get the call to Missouri.

As a youth, our midwestern stake or region had a special meeting. Only TR holders could attend. My parents gave the FHE lesson about the 10 virgins and the church (again). This was going to be it! My Dad even mentioned that finally there would be a benefit for being only 2-3 hours from Independence, Missouri. All my Utah and western cousins would have to travel so much farther.Originally posted by Portland Ute View PostWe are going to get called to Missouri and I'll be on a cruise ship in the Inside Passage. I don't remember what the meeting was about. Maybe the visiting authority mentioned a new temple or something. But it was a big let down. I was in charge of teaching FHE the following week and I selected a journal reading from one of our ancestors. This ancestor kept a fully provisioned wagon at the ready so his family could get a quick start back to Missouri whenever Brigham Young announced a return to Zion. The call never came - not sure how many false alarms they had to endure. But the provisioned wagon and team did come in handy when it was used to assist and rescue the Martin and Willie Handcart companies.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. Yeah, I keep a closet full of wheat for some special occasion. I like the wagon idea. Maybe I could justify buying a hummer to park in my front yard to store all the wheat in just in case we are called back....Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostAs a youth, our midwestern stake or region had a special meeting. Our stake had a general stake priesthood meeting scheduled for that evening, now they've cancelled it and asked us to attend this instead.
The official church letter just says it is for everyone who attends ward council and their spouses, and anyone else who is interested.
Sometimes I think they make a big deal of these things so that they can bump attendance and move from getting 5% of the people who are "supposed to be there" all the way up to 25-30% instead.

That is rad. I can't recall a time where I was convinced the Second Coming was imminent or we were going back to Jackson or anything like that. Maybe my parents were more level-headed than I give them credit for.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostAs a youth, our midwestern stake or region had a special meeting. This. Your run-of-the-mill high council member, ward mission leader, etc. has absolutely no idea what's going to be announced.Originally posted by kccougar View PostI wonder about the hype for these things. I assume it comes from well-meaning local church leaders who REALLY want their members to attend. Probably the same basis for the faith-promoting emails that I occasionally see floating around. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I'll still attend since my wife is a ward missionary, and I assume I will be invited as well. I don't expect any earth-shaking pronouncements.

Go to church in the vicinity of a natural disaster shortly after it's happened; Millennial Fever gets contagious. NOLA was almost toxic for the first six months after Katrina. I actually gave a talk against the Second Coming happening anytime soon in an attempt to bring people back to Earth.Originally posted by SandYFan View PostThat is rad. I can't recall another church meeting, besides a temple dedication, where a TR was required to attend.Originally posted by SandYFan View PostThat is rad. It'll be available on lds.org which kind of gives me an excuse to skip it
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
