  • Does your mission still exist?

Was just reading through the new mission announcements, and Cancun is now its own mission. When I served in the Mexico Merida mission, it took in the three states of the Yucatan Peninsula (Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo).

I'm assuming the new Cancun mission constitutes just the state of Quintana Roo as there's nothing geographically to add to it in the surrounding area. Cool that there's a new mission on the peninsula, but I'm actually a bit sad my mission no longer exists as I knew it.

I'm sure for some of the old timers their missions look nothing like they did at the time.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Nope. The Tokyo South Mission went the way of the dodo too.

No more, "the Tokyo South Mission, is a field that's white today, the people are prepared to hear the words we have to say..." That with trumpets sounding was a sight to behold.

My mission, Austria, was merged with Germany Munich over a decade ago. Some of the Austrian members were pretty bummed, including one who remarked to me, "Where Hitler failed the Church has succeeded."

The Osaka mission is long gone. Missions in Japan have been consolidating. MBN, happyone, and I were there during the golden era. It has been going downhill ever since.

I'm still bummed. One of my professors served there, and his daughter is there as we speak. I hope she's had a chance to eat at Herbs (aka Helene Schmidt's Schnitzelwirt).

Osaka merged out of existence about the time I was there.

I haven't kept track; how many are there now? Six?
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Nope, it didn't even continue to exist while I was there.

Great Lakes, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana. Ohio was broken into it's own mission while I was in Cincinnatti. Later the Akron Zone was split and I became the first ever Cleveland, Ohio Zone Leader. They took the District which was 10 Elders and shipped in 14 more and made it a 24 man Zone.

Did I do a good job? Heck I don't know, but there is now a Cleveland, Ohio Mission.

England London South. Still there. Hoping it's still there in another 15-20 years when my wife and I will go on a mission together.

England London. It will exist forever and ever and ever. Imitation London (aka London South)? Probably not.

Copenhagen is still hanging around, surprisingly enough. I was in Europe in the early 2000s when there was a lot of mission consolidation going on, including cross-border (i.e. Belgium/Netherlands, Austria/Munich, etc.). There were a lot of rumors going on that we were going to be combined with either Norway or Sweden, if not both. I still think it may be just a matter of time - I don't think there were more than 70 missionaries in my mission when I left, and my hunch is that it's only gotten lower since. Plus all the languages are close enough that you could theoretically have people serving in multiple countries over the course of their 18/24 months.

Yes and no. Netherlands-Amsterdam split while I was there and I got sent to the newly created Belgium, Antwerpen mission. My understanding is that they've long since merged again, so I guess it's the same as the original mission to which I was called.

You will never hold down the South, sir!

You did have Wimbledon and the temple down there, so you at least had that much going for you. But you also had Brixton.

No, Spain-Malaga was merged into the Madrid mission. Less active members now than 20 years ago.
