Well someone I know I heard went in to get temple recommend. When asked if he kept the Word of Wisdom said he had to drink coffee since he was night guard and needed it to get going or stay awake. Told couldn't get recommend, His reply well there are people in a lot worse shape than me overweight and the like and they get recommends so he should get it. Bishop I guess relented don't know about sp though what happened there.

Thing is wow is more about obedience than diet. Food faddists who declare what the prophet hasn't had time to take note. More or less than this. Common sense says not to overeat. However by discussing overweight people with temple recommends rationalization and that is someone's justification for there own lack of obedience.

It don't matter what overweight people do if you don't keep the word of wisdom your salvation is damaged.

There was some drinking after wow given. Not enforced. In fact when one of the Patriarchs was ordained celebrated with wine. Gary Smiths lost legacy. Since it became tr requirement we are not free to break it with our preceptions of what other people do.

my mother-in-law (convert) drinks coffee every morning and has a current temple recommend. She's had conversation with her bishop about it, and I believe he was inspired to give it to her.

Considering what my MIL has gone through during her life, I think her bishop understands and is showing her some much needed mercy. Coffee (and the rest of the WOW) is such a minor thing in the grand scheme of things.

When asked if she kept the Word of Wisdom she said she occasionally drank a cup of coffee, She said now Bishop youre not going to let that keep me from going to the temple are you? To which he replied surely you will not let a cup of coffee stand between you and the Lord.

Basically said prepare for temple. So some people know more than prophet on matter.
