actually, I think they were always viewed as rebellious, even subversive, but they were just dismissed as silly or inexperienced as to how the priesthood functions. Now that it has been part of an organized event the act draws a lot more attention, at least enough to make leaders look at it in a more serious manner, so I guess that is a positive, even though the zealots are reacting in an abusive way.

I have found in my many days here upon the earth and as a member of the mormon culture, that Bishops travel to different strokes.

I could go back and name the Bishops who would have called the women in for a chat. Fortunately, many more of the ones I can remember wouldn't have bothered a bit with it unless the ward busybodies (usually women) got into his ear so much he did it to get them off of his back. I have had a couple of Bishops who would have on the other hand told these ladies to back off.

Bishops are more generic (in their fundamentalism) I have found than say the EQ Pres. However, they aren't as generic as the SP's.

We had numerous women wear pants/slacks in my PA wards without any of that baggage.

How certain of you are that? Do you know what people thought of them? Do you know what people said about them behind their backs? My experience has been different. Mormon women that wear pants to church are viewed differently.

Seriously? Are you really going to bitch about this movement on that basis?

That is the word I have been looking for, very conservative, mullah and fundamentalists just didn't seem right. Those terms are more degrading than descriptive.

              Zealot is a good description.

Even the current RS president, who always brags to Mrs. NWC about how culturally unorthodox she is in the church, let my wife know that she disapproves of women wearing pants to church.

It wouldn't matter if that press release was read over the pulpit every week. A woman wearing pants to church casts a distinct impression for most members.

My wife has two friends who are on disparate ends of the spectrum. They got into all sorts of facebook fights with each and eventually had a sit down like mature adults do when they want to reconcile differences. The conservative friend summed up her issue in one sentence "You wear pants to church." Every disagreement they had could be traced back to that fact.

Oh, and (this is for Indy) this was a few years ago, so recent enough to be relevant, but not recent enough to be attached to the demonstration.

I love the PA ward(s) you so often mention. I imagine they're something akin to the City of Enoch First Ward.

                    • I think Mrs. Funk's friend the chorister should wear shorter dresses to church, with or without leggings. That's what I would do.

I wonder if that's a directive from above. One of the things that surprises me most about Mormons (myself included) is how spineless we become when an authority figure in the Church tells us to "jump". Pure speculation, but I've seen it in a friend who is EQP and very well educated (degrees from Yale and Duke) and started off saying, "I'm not going to be the "do your hometeaching EQP" but within months was constantly harping on it.

I'm pretty darn certain. If there was a backlash, it didn't alter anyone's attire; and there was a significant percentage of women that wore pants.

You must not read most of what I mention about those wards then.

I was just imagining what I'd do if I were a woman and someone went out of their way to be a punk like that. I think I'd probably wear a floor-lenght skirt with Adidas tear-away warmup pants underneath, with spandex under the warmup pants. During the opening hymn, I'd sneak out the skirt so when I first stood up, I'd be in the warmups. Then, before the second song, I'd stand up, tear away the warmups and direct the sacrament hymn in the spandex (after whirling the warmups over my head and tossing them into the front row).

I'm not sure. But in her case, I really think she views it as a threat to her life choices. She has 'rebelled' in a few instances, like allowing her kids to play organized sports on Sunday. These are the types of things she has deviated from the norm, and openly discusses them with my wife. But in all the important things, she has followed the usual script for mormon women. I may be wrong, but I believe she sees the symbolism of women going to church in pants as devaluing the choices she has made.
