  • Giving Missionaries Rides by Assignment

We used to have elders, but last month we got two about-as-interesting-as-uncooked-elbow-macaroni sister missionaries who don't ever ask any questions and give terse responses to your questions in a conversation. I got this email from my EQP this morning:

    Good morning Brethren,

The EQ has been assigned to give a ride to the Sister missionaries to their district meeting in Cheraw. The timing would be from around 9 AM (to get them to the Cheraw building before 10 AM) and then home by about 1 PM. With these being Sister missionaries, a husband and wife or a wife by herself would need to be in the car with the missionaries. If you or your wives have the willingness or ability to do this assignment, please get back to me ASAP. Thanks and have a great day!

    Brother EQP
Cheraw is about 40 mins away. They have a car of their own. They are assigning priesthood holders to go with their wives, or get their wives to drive them. This is coming from the stake president.

Why waste miles when you can inconvenience members?

The mission only gives them so many miles. I think it's patently ridiculous to have the members driving them so the mission can save some money.

          Completely agreed.

There's no point in them having a car in a large area if they can only drive it a certain amount.

I was a disobedient missionary and would have just driven myself and not pestered the members on a weekday in the morning.

The Church is miserly, and sometimes to a fault. This sounds like one of those times.

The Church also has plenty of poorly trained leaders who don't have the tools to do much more than issue "assignments."

I would completely ignore this "assignment."

This is stupid. I was in a large state-side mission. Most areas had cars. We knew when and where district and zone meetings were scheduled and were expected to budget our miles accordingly. Members were never asked to provide transportation to such meetings. In fact, there were some zone meetings where we were expected to drive our cars because the mission hired the services of a mechanic(s) who would inspect the cars during the meeting(s).

If we had a "long drive" that month, we were expected to ask for members' help to drive to places locally, like to the local chapel to attend church. If there was still a problem with miles, we were expected to contact other companionships in the zone to get a ride/car pool. The understanding in my mission was that if you were bumming on someone else's miles, you were expected to buy lunch/dinner on the way back.

LOL! Assigning the EQ members to assign their wives to drive the sisters. True hilarity. Why not just assign the RS to do this? I know, because it's been labeled a Priesthood assignment.

The sisters would do well to better plan their miles. Chances are that they are burning their miles doing needless things. Either that, or the mission is not giving them the tools they need to do their job.

Or you could just lie (for the lord) about your miles.

Did you not learn anything from the story of the Army of Helaman? They obeyed with exactness!!

I just found out a few weeks ago, about some kind of tracking device that is put in mission cars. It beeps if they are going too fast or driving dangerously. I was speaking in church, after a recently returned mish, who mentioned this device in his talk. When I spoke, I mentioned I also had a similar device, in my car, that said when I was going to fast, or not paying attention, it's called a wife. That's gold Jerry! Gold!

                        Dear Bishop,

Brother EQP dutifully sent out this request to fulfill an assignment to take sister missionaries to a district meeting in Cheraw. I know that you have no say in the matter, but I think you should kick the feedback up the chain and tell whomever is the decision maker on this that it is patently ridiculous to ask men to take time off of work to drive two women who have a car at their disposal to Cheraw for a meeting. I do not think that this is service; I think it is taking advantage of the willingness of some members to essentially donate their time off to the mission's bottom line, because this boils down to a simple question of economics. The mission doesn't want to spend the money, so they place the burden on the members by way of assignment. The EQ is not a bunch of retirees. We are working men mostly, many with wives who are also employed, and this is, to reiterate my feelings, patently ridiculous.

Not that it will change anything because grumpy old men are deciding these things for us, but let them know that at least one priesthood holder in Hartsville thinks it's wrong.
                        From Brother EQP:

                        Hey Mac,

I feel exactly the same way in regards to this and will be talking with the Bishop and Brother XXXX. Especially for members of the EQ who work during the day, this is an impossible assignment.

We had an assignment last month from the bishop's storehouse. They wanted 8 people to volunteer there from 2pm to 8pm and they specifically stated that were not allowed to have two people cover one shift by breaking it up into smaller time increments. Needless to say the assignment didn't go over too well and I don't think the quota got filled. I don't think our bishop really cared that it didn't get filled.

FWIW, serving at the bishop's storehouse is much more in line with actual service than driving sister's to a district meeting.

This is a silly request. We constantly have to remind the Elders in our Branch to go easy on the members. I tell the Elders that I know they can't possibly fathom in their one-track missionary minds right now how members wouldn't be willing to drop everything to help missionary work at any given moment. But when they finish school and have families, they will understand having multiple responsibilities better.

This is an understandable attitude in gung-ho 19 year old missionaries, but it's sad that some older leaders have the same attitiudes.
