We've had sisters for the first time since I've lived here for the last 6 months. I could not disagree with you more, the sisters we have had are energetic, outgoing, polite it is almost disappointing how they compare to the elders. We've had 5 different sisters and thus far it has been universally true. Also I think the MP here must emphasize a super firm hand shake from the sisters so they don't seem weak or something, they shake hands like they are trying to crush you. ldc speculates that they do it to ward off elders from fantasizing about handies from them.

We made plans to room together that Fall at BYU. (I was transferring and he was planning on re-enrolling). From a timing standpoint, the six-month wait would work for him. However, he was informed by BYU that he had lost his full-ride academic scholarship due to his breaking the HC while on his mission. The guy then changed plans and enrolled at State U. The following year, he was ex-communicated for a futher violation related to the lone incident that got him sent home early from his mission.
The bolded part is only true if he lied about what he was sent home for. Admitted to sex with a girl, denied the abortion? If he just hooked up with a girl on the mission and got sent home he received his punishment then, they don't follow up with you later and decide to punish you more.

Your wife seems to have some impure thoughts going on there. Perhaps you need to share with her the foolproof method of singing a hymn when Satan puts those thoughts in her mind.

        • I've always thought it very strange when missionaries don't go home at least for the funeral of a parent or sibling who dies. Especially when it is the missionary who decides they don't want to interrupt their service.

Tell her that only encourages them.

This happened to a companion of mine. His dad died and he decided to stay on the mission. I don't remember if his family counseled him to stay or whatever. But he did seem OK with the decision. Back then, I probably would have defaulted to the same decision, though I'm sure it would be a hard decision.

Holy shit that's crazy! Go home, dude! Imagine having the rest of your life to regret missing your dad's funeral so that you could keep up appearances in your stupid mission that you could go right back to at any time.

Of course I agree with you now. But back then, sacrifice brings the blessings...

Actually with some people it is a bragging point. I actually have had someone point to Elder so and so with pride and say he didn't come home for a parents funeral. Sorry, your decision, but it doesn't rack up I am impressed points with me.

Exactly. In the weird fraternity of your zone or mission legacy or whatever it has some pull, but a person who is able to take a step back has to admit that eschewing "carnal things" like family members' funerals is unfiltered crazy.

                        • I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I was asked to extend. I entered the MTC on July 24, 1996 and came home August 10, 1998.

...okay the reality was that we got a new mission president in June 1998 and supposedly no missionaries were supposed to leave in the transfer cycle in July 1998. That's what was said to me. Then the July transfer cycle came around and low and behold a couple guys were able to go home that had either gone into the MTC in late June 1996 or on my entry date. So, I was suckered into spending an extra month in Germany. We called July 24, 1998 my "chump day."

On a positive note, the August transfer cycle brought in something like 20 new missionaries (there were only around 110 missionaries in my mission, 10 missionaries during one of the summer months wasn't unusual, but 20 was shock to the system). Frankfurt, Germany -- home city for my mission -- was my last area and according to the mission president the church administration made an error with how many missionaries they had assigned for that one month. But the calls were made and they weren't going to tell the kids "hey, we were just joking, you're really supposed to go to Siberia." So, I had to take out about four of these kids at a time for a couple days and had ample opportunity to relish in the joy of going home while simultaneously letting these poor jet-lagged kids know that they were in it for the long haul now.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Maybe that has changed but that was the case when I returned from my mission about 30 years ago. The guy hooked up with a girl with about two months left on his mission and got sent home. He wasn't ex-communicated then but that was fairly common at that time. Instead he was put on some sort of church probation and it was during this time that he got involved in a relationship. That's what got him ex'd as he was still on probation. Maybe the process has changed in the decades since, but that was how this stake operated back then. My Dad was on the HC and I expressed to him my disagreement about my friend being ex'd. I then got a lecture about how one doesn't break commandments while being on church probation and that my friend was fortunate to not have been excommunicated after being sent home from his mission.

I disagree....I hate funerals and would be happy to miss one.

That makes more sense, so it was the same thing that got him sent home not the same instance that caused him to get sent home. I misunderstood.
