Anne Romney: the most visible Mormon woman since Marie Osmond

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to meet Joanna Brooks and listen to her speak a couple times, the last of which was a reading of her book followed by a Q&A among a group of members (most of whom were 60+) who form a long standing study group headed up by Greg Prince (he of the David O. McKay bio). Admittedly these are mostly affluent Marylanders and, it appeared, liberal leaning.

At some point, a woman asked a very pointed question about Anne Romney and tried to get Joanna to give a feminist perspective on Mrs. Romney. Joanna deftly sidestepped the question and declined to say anything negative (or really anything of substance) about her, but simply said, "it is worth reflecting on that she is the most visible Mormon woman since Marie Osmond."

Is this something people are thinking about? My sense is that believers are fairly comfortable with Mitt Romney representing Mormon "maleness." Does Anne Romney fairly portray what it means to be a Mormon woman? I'm not suggesting in anyway that she is a spokesperson or should be expected to represent anything, I'm just think about the reality that she probably does, like it or not.

        Gayle Ruzicka trumps them all.

"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

I'm not sure it counts if she's speaking on behalf of and at the behest of her husband.

Ann Romney has carved out her own niche in the Dressage subculture. Well, actually, it is a niche in a smaller, yet active sub-subculture: Dressage horse owners.

If somone could tell me "what it means to be a mormon woman", I could then have an opinion of whether she represents that or not.

If she does to some, I neither like nor dislike it.

Harry Reid is not OK with that.

I think its better framed who is the most "visibly mormon" woman. I'm not talking about which mormon gets caught in a papparazzi photo with her Gs hanging out. I will bet that most people have no idea that Julianne Hough or Stephanie Meyers are mormon.

When you state someone is mormon can I assume that means "active" mormon or just in name only.

When I hear some hot gal is mormon, I want to know if she's "really" mormon.

Why? If somebody is Jewish, nobody asks if somebody is Orthodox, Conservative or Reform, or just ethnically. Why shouldn't your consideration of Mormon be anybody associated with the culture, whether observant or not?

Presumably because that's not what it means to be Mormon.

Really? I have heard those follow up questions asked quite often. in fact, I have heard many jewish people further qualify their self descriptions.
