Really? I have heard those follow up questions asked quite often. in fact, I have heard many jewish people further qualify their self descriptions.

It's okay for Jewish to add these labels to themselves, but it's considered gauche to ask for the label. Key distinction.

To me, the tent of Mormonism is expanding so that somebody considering himself or herself Mormon by upbringing, culture, practice or other association, is Mormon. It doesn't mean you will be handing out temple recommends to him, but he can still be Mormon.
