gotcha. My grandfather was a mean sob, who also was a travelling minister (judging from how poor he was, I'm guessing he wasn't very good at preachin'). His behavior, "in the name of God" was certainly a huge factor in my father being atheist/agnostic (he would never talk about it) his whole life.

How do evangelicals contribute to that? Being around the evanges was the first time I was ever proud to be Mormon.

Methinks you've got an interesting story.

I love Evangelicals. I especially love contradicting everything they say with reason AND scripture. And, when that fails, I love pointing out examples from history that dispel their notions about God.

I tend to agree. Evangelicals make me detest their god.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

I view conversing with them about religion as akin to pillow-fighting a toddler. Eventually they get mad and scream "no fair."

If an evangelical's god is what is god, I want no part of that. Foundationalism makes believing unpalatable.

But what if God really is unpalatable? Are we then not obligated to believe in Him?

This is my main gripe with theism. If there is a God, he is external to us and we don't get to define his nature to meet our expectations. Is God only relevant insofar as we agree with Him?

Unless Spinoza is correct, man is an independent agent and can thrust his fist at divinity, just as the Athenians did.

The reason evangelicals propose an unpalatable god is they do so simplistically that it would require a kindergartner to believe in their god.The universe is more complex than they posit.

Man is not obligated to worship a vain, hateful and self-absorbed being. He must earn our trust and respect just as we must earn his.

I just tell people like that that I'm just fine going to hell. They always seem shocked. If they persist, I just tell them I'm fine going to hell because I don't believe in hell. They usually stop after that.

I did have one coworker make a polygamy joke to me tonight.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I once told my Baptist friend, "Have you ever considered that Heaven for me would be Hell for you, and Heaven for you would be hell to me, and we could be in the same place at the same time."

                            He agreed.
