An inactive member woman who Mrs SMR works with, and has been away from the church for as long as she can remember, was a spectator at the parade yesterday. She was touched by the members who participated and tonight asked Mrs SMR what she needs to do to start attending church and may go with us this coming Sunday.
    That's very cool.

I think events like this can go a long way to change hearts and minds. The timing was not good for me, but I regret not working out a way to participate.

But we don't wan THOSE kinds of people! These parade participants are attracting a bunch of sinners! The LDS church is no place for sinners.

          • Apparently the MoTab sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" yesterday during Music and the Spoken Word. Kudos to them for extending an olive branch to the gay community. I should have figured it would start with the artsy side of things.

            • And our Sunday School Lesson was about David and Jonathan, the Bible's most famous gay couple. Coincidence? I think not.

It was the only way to ensure 1/2 of the tenor section was in the tabernacle and not marching on the streets.

So a police officer was asked to participate in a motorcade in the Pride parade on Sunday. Apparently he asked for a lesser role, most likely because he doesn't support marriage equality but knew he had a responsibility as a police officer to participate where asked. He even tried to swap roles with someone else. Interesting that the police force put him on leave for not fulfilling his duty.

I don't really care about the guy's personal convictions, however I find it ridiculous that a motorcade would be considered a police duty worthy of putting someone on leave to the point that it defamed him. Now, if he refused to actual "protect and serve" then I'd have an issue with it, but the response by SLCPD is stupid.

Just as stupid are the marriage equality supporters that are calling for him to be fired.

                    It's part of his job.

A police officer's job is to serve the community. The entire community. The police department can't afford to send the message that its officers will decide for themselves whom they choose to serve. If the police officer in question isn't able to serve the entire community, he has no business being a cop.

I wouldn't consider participating in a motorcade "serving the community" for a police officer. I thought they served the community by enforcing laws

                          It's community outreach.

What would you consider a motorcycle cop that is leading a funeral procession? Certainly not enforcing laws...

You don't think there's a difference between leading a funeral procession (providing safe passage way for motorists) and riding for show in a parade?

So would a police officer be allowed to not be part of a funeral procession for someone he disagreed with? Say a leader of the LDS church.

Non-Seq provides what is IMO the correct answer for why this officer should be put on leave.
