Gay and Mormon: BYU hosted panel for gay BYU students

This panel wasn't a big deal. BYU doesn't have a problem. It's all just a ploy to get us to accept this behavior.

I think many LGBT groups use campaigns against hateful behavior to spread acceptance, not just tolerance, of their behavior. Does anyone really think there was gay bashing going on or ostracization of gays at BYU outside of one or two isolated incidents every couple years? I doubt it. I went to BYU for a while and was amazed at how many guys there were who I thought were probably gay and no one said anything about it. The myth that we're a "gay unfriendly" campus is ridiculous. If that movie is correct and we really have 1800 LBGT students we're VERY gay friendly. But back to my original point, if there's not really much hateful behavior towards gays to speak of, then why was the movie made? They want the general population to continue moving closer towards full fledged acceptance and condoning their behavior."In conclusion, let me give a shout-out to dirty sex. I'm glad that the Church is finding a better way to deal with homosexuality. That being said the idea that the Church could or would somehow allow for and condone homosexual activity and marriages for active members is a pipe dream.
The doctrine is too clearly defined and the shift would require that members accept that either leaders in the past or in the present were not following God's direction (yes, I do think this is a distinctly different situation than polygamy or blacks and the priesthood.)
To change would be to openly admit the total absence of divine guidance.

Yeah BYU was always friendly toward gay people but until 2007 if you were openly gay you got kicked out.Originally posted by DU Ute View PostThis panel wasn't a big deal. BYU doesn't have a problem. It's all just a ploy to get us to accept this behavior.

You act like nothing has ever changed in the LDS Church.Originally posted by TexTechCoug View PostSeems like an extreme stretch for God to declare something new and different about an eternal principle. "God has decided that what he said earlier about x has changed because He has changed his mind."
We probably would barely recognize the LDS Church the way it will look a hundred years from now.

The Church has certainly changed, but this would be a doozy.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostYou act like nothing has ever changed in the LDS Church.

I still subscribe to the Church being true, but I would have to call it quits with this one, not because I don't want to go to Church with gays, but because I just couldn't swallow that God could take such disparate views on the same principle.
Pick any Church principle and make a similar change and I would feel the same, what if the Church came out and said marriage wasn't necessary or that the Book of Mormon was not inspired.
