Here is a montage of the parts of the JRH interview they used. You have to wonder if he knew he was going to be asked some of that. Parts even made me uncomfortable. Lots of interesting comments though.
the journalist was everything but respectful.

I'm tired of people pounding on the baptism for the dead. Yeah, the church has overstepped its bounds with regards to the jews, but the way journalists portray it completely misrepresents the whole point. Even in that clip it was misrepresented.

I agree. I think all in all JRH handled himself pretty well.

I'm watching it right now and the guy is the biggest dick in the world. He has absolutely zero respect for the institution he is investigating. He comes off as very smug, all-knowing and even a bit sanctimonious.

I have not watched the whole program, and anytime you view something edited and cut-up like this was you miss context (I watch the Daily Show after all), but I did not think that the journalist was disrespectful to Elder Holland in those clips. Were some of the questions uncomfortable? Ye, but just because he asks an uncomfortable question it does not mean he is being disrespectful.

You may be tired of the baptism for the dead questions, but the topic is timely and relevant to recent well-publicized events. I don't think he would be doing his job if he didn't ask the questions.

I think for the most part Elder Holland did pretty well. (With the exception of the Osama slip up )

I watched about half of it. So far, it's all over the place. It's very poorly produced, and I'm sure the parts with Holland were heavily edited for maximum effect. But it's clear when the BBC guy was asking him about cults he let him get under his skin. He didn't need to appeal to his own schooling and intelligence to make his point. Also, he seemed kind of evasive when they were talking about the Strengthening the Members committee.

I don't fault him for his answers about the temple penalties. I'm not sure how you could answer it better with a faithful perspective.

So I watched the whole thing and recommend it highly. Many parts are just laugh out loud funny. A chorus line of evangellicals, ex-mormons, and polygamists. Outside of Elder Holland and the poor church media relations guy, I dont think he actually talked to any real Mormons.

                  Highlights:
                  • It seems like every meeting with ex-mormons is in some shadowy, sketchy place (a bar, the corner booth in a Greek restaurant, a non-LDS church?).
                  • The group of ex-mormons featuring the guy with the bolo tie. I don't think they help with the overall slant of the peace.
                  • The bolo tie guy.
                  • The evangelical couple in Iowa that cannot possibly bring themselves to vote for Mitt.
                  • The lady complaining that no matter where she moves, The Church somehow finds her and sends home teachers (how sinister).
                  • All the references to Mormons working in the FBI and CIA (how even more sinister).
                  • Mitt's cousin Park and his story of being followed, even just a few weeks ago. And what the hell is with the Romney's and their names?
                  • Elder Holland referring to Obama as Osama bin Ladin.
                  • Elder Holland asking for the list of 30 ex-mormons ("I've got a committee that would be very interested in those names.")
                  • How they made Santorum almost seem hip with the background music and cool shots.

Seriously, you need to watch this, it's very, very good.

All that said, I recognized in the bunch of ex-mormons meeting in what looked like a non-LDS church, a guy I knew pretty well from an old ward. I wasn't surprised, since he was starting on his way out back then. I thought it odd that he was in the group that talked so much about how they had been shunned, since it was he who quit coming to church despite many efforts to reach out to him. We remained friends and he would often want to talk about Adam-God, the history, etc. Worse than his inactivity in The Church, he was not a very dedicated BYU fan. I bet he's a UofUtah fan now that he has moved back to Utah. His wife was great.

                  Anyway, enjoy!

I dont' think his tone in asking the questions was disrespectful, condescending and smarmy. If you watch the whole thing you'll see what it is I'm talking about. He misstates simple, basic facts that show either ignorance and a lack of preparation or a clear intent to mislead. He is the definition of a hack.

As for the baptism, I agree that the topic needs to be discussed. The church has taken a lackadaisical approach and deserves to be pounded for it. I'm tired of the lazy approach and the misrepresentation on the issue. Any Mormon knows that performing the ordinance for a dead person does not mean that they have become Mormon, yet very very few journalists ever mention this. Talk about it all you want, but do your homework on the issue. It gets tiring to see so many lazy ass journalists phone it in.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Thanks for the snipets. After living as a mormon 65 years I have heard it all before. I quit watching anything the BBC puts out years ago and therefor for thsoe two reasons I won't be watching it.

Why in the world would they need to talk to any real Mormons? All you need are Ex-Mormons!

The interviewer was being dickish, but I think Holland went overboard with his response. Seemed too defensive.
