  • Prophet cutting the ribbon?

I thought it was tasteless that President Monson was helping to cut the ribbon to open City Creek. How lame is it to have the leader of your religion opening a giant mall that was funded with tithing dollars?

Can anyone imagine the pope or another religious figure celebrating the opening a huge shopping mall that was built with church money? Imagine Mother Teresa opening a shopping mall. I think this is just one more example of how horrible the Church's PR department is.

What are some worthy things that could be done with 2 billion dollars besides building a megamall? Think about how many homeless people could have been housed and fed with 2 billion dollars. I suppose our religious leaders would argue that by stimulating the economy in SLC, homeless people in SLC will be able to find jobs, etc.

Too bad he didn't wear his temple robes. a la George Washington wearing his Masonic robes to place the cornerstone for the Congress building:

Besides that, construction of City Creek kept Moose's Whistle (and thousands of others) employed for the past 3 years. So it isn't all bad.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

How many times do we have to go over this? It wasn't tithing funds. It was from investments the church made using seed money from selling the gold plates.

This mall is going to pay back at least ten times the church's investment. It only has something like $7,000+ invested per square foot of retail space. Given that none of those retailers will be open on Sunday they will all be greatly blessed. Plus those condos are going to sell like hot cakes. Who wouldn't want to live in a great and spacious building looking down on all those people going to the temple?

So I just googled Monson Prophet City Creek and this thread was the number three answer. How cool is it that google already found this thread and indexed it as the third best page for that particular search?

Also, I now have less than three months of residency left, and I am on the easiest rotation ever. I decided to celebrate by consuming a whole bunch of caffeine.

This is so new and exciting I don't know where to start. But tithing funds were not used.

All Church money is tithing money. Don't be ridiculous.

And seriously--why would a religious leader open a shopping mall? It's not classy. But maybe it makes sense for our church. After all, we are the American religion, and shopping malls are the centerpiece of American existence.

I never have had the understanding that tithing money was given conditionally. Or with the expectation that it is paid based on the fact it had better be spent "wisely".

I am not preaching though because I know you are kidding.

I don't remember doing this before. I haven't been posting that much on CUF lately.

In any case, I am emphasizing the PR decision to have prophets cut the ribbon. I think it's a PR mistake (independently of the decision to build the mall in the first place).
