  • If a bishop's wife dies, does the bishop get released right way?

I've never seen this happen, but it must.

Globally, I wonder how many times this has happened over the last 25 years?

Well, you are the guy that could probably make the best estimate. Start crunching some numbers!
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I bill $375/hour for that kind of analysis.

Didn't it happen in the SLC area a few years ago? Drunk driver killed a bishop's wife and kids? Anybody else remember this or am I up in the night?

That was my first thought when I saw the name.

Most bishops serve for 5 years, usually while middle-aged; that's a long time, I'd think the chances of any middle-aged person dying in a five year span is significant. There must be some policy. Anyone have The Stake President's Handbook?

The odds of a 45 year old nonsmoking male in moderate health dying within the next 5 years is approximately 90 to 1.

I had a close friend in grad school and a few years later he was called to be a bishop. He was in his early thirties. About a month later, his wife was killed in an auto accident leaving him with four young children. I thought that surely they would release him ASAP. They left him in for an entire year before they finally called someone else. I couldn't believe it.

Was Job a bishop when all that went down? I wonder if he got released.

I have yet to ask for a release from a calling, but I can't imagine not asking for one under those circumstances.

Edit: If they didn't release me first. I'm surprised they left your friend in so long.
