That is excellent! I wish more people would take up the cross of learning Spanish. Cultural misunderstandings would diminish greatly if we took the time to reach out a linguistic olive branch.

If there were a Spanish ward/branch anywhere nearby, my family would go to that one. No doubt about it. I try my best, but my children will not speak Spanish. I think if they had a social system to help with the language, they would thrive. I can't wait for my sabbatical (2014)......the family is going to live in Costa Rica for a semester.

My influence over others is so great that as I left various areas in Guatemala the locals spoke with my accent and not vice versa.

On the Bayern Munich jersey occasion, I'd met a girl literally two days after my mission who I wouldn't have touched two months later and we went rollerblading. It was the triple whammy- soccer jersey, relatively unattractive girl and rollerblades- not a shining moment in my life.

Fortunately, it wasn't as ridiculous as the guys bringing their skateboards on campus to class.
The guy in the video is Aziz Ansari. He is a pretty funny comedian who should be getting a lot of buzz in the near future, as he is slated to appear in the upcoming NBC sitcom, Parks & Recreation, with Amy Poehler.

I first learned of him when he posted his "Sh*tty Mixed Tape" competition on Youtube. I think I posted that link somewhere on cougarguard a year or so ago. Here it is on collegehumor because youtube took it down. I crack up everytime I hear Sixpence None the Richer and LFO. Cruising through Battery Park blasting LFO.

He also had a cameo in Scrubs for about 5 episodes this season. He wasn't in the last one, though, which probably has something do to with his new show on a competing network.

I call bullshit on the accent. Two years is not long enough to start sounding Australian, British, Latino. They are showing off. I can see mixing up a few words for the first couple of weeks home. We have friends that moved to Texas 8 years ago and they still sound like Utahns. British people can live in the States for decades and still sound British. It is an RM way of trying to pick up chicks or prove what a good missionary they were. The funny thing is they don't realize that their accents don't sound authentic.

Even worse is the testimony in the foreign language at their homecoming. I was guilty of that one.

One of my ultimate pet peeves. In theory it is the most important part of the entire talk, and they make that the part that nobody understands. Brilliant.

Fortunately for me, this was also one of my father's pet peeves, so I had the foresight to avoid it. Afterwards, you wouldn't believe how many people told me they were disappointed that I didn't bear my testimony in Spanish, because they wanted to hear me speak it. I usually responded with some joking quip like 'what, you needed proof that I actually learned to speak it?! <chuckle chuckle>, after which I would walk away and mumble some Spanish curse words under my breath.

My buddy decided that using his "ozzie" would help him pick up the ladies, it worked for him, his wife instantly fell in love with his charming accent. I, on the other hand was screwed, not many girlies are impressed when you break out Navajo on them. My buddy still uses his "ozzie" to this day; he's been home almost 13 years.

I had a couple of mission buddies in attendance that I called ugly and gay in my testimony. They got a good laugh.

A few years after my mission, a guy in our ward came home and shared his testimony in the same language. He didn't make any sense. He just said a bunch of phrases he memorized from the discussions.

I picked up enough of an ozzie accent from a couple companions to do a passable imitation for the ignorant. When I was engaged, my wife's little sister was a freshman. I called her up and pretended to be an Aussie stalker who saw her name on her notes and looked her up and then wanted a date. Freaked her out. My then-fiance was laughing her head off. I can't remember if we told her who it was or not.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I didn't either. I told the congregation that because I hadn't borne my testimony before my mission, due in large measure to not having had one, I thought it best to express it in English. I invited anyone who wanted to hear me rant in German (I went to Austria), they could talk to me after the meeting. No one took me up on the offer, except for an elderly woman who asked me if I had seen lots of kangaroos.

Between Bluehair's picture of the polygamist jelly roll and calling his mission buddies ugly and gay during his foreign language testimony at the homecoming sacrament, he's quickly becoming my favorite poster.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

LOL! Kangaroos! That reminds me of the Dumber and Dumber scene where Lloyd tells the lady she has a lovely accent and asks where she is from. She says she is from Austria to which he replies, "Let's put some shrimp on the barbie!".

In all honesty, I can't even remember if I gave my testimony in German during the homecoming talk. I sure hope I didn't.

All I remember from that period is my grandpa dying about 8 days after I got back from my mission, my stake president's hair turning white (and I found out later he had to preside over some church disciplinary proceedings involving his son) and meeting the girl that I later rollerbladed with a week or two later while wearing my Bayern Munich soccer jersey.
