A quick google-search shows that nobody has a citation, and that the same quote just keeps circling around the internet. I just assumed it was some 19th century's very loose translation of Hesiod's explanation of the Age of Iron.

Here's the passage I thought it was from. Judge for yourselves whether you think it's the passage in question:
