  • Daniel Sorensen's remarks...

    About BYU vs Ole Miss:

    http://www.heraldextra.com/sports/co...cc4c03286.html

"The purpose of BYU, why we're here and why we're playing and where we're trying to go with this program. It kind of fires you up. It kind of gets you excited.

"To go out there and play for a specific purpose of showing people that we're playing for more than football. This is a faith-based university and we're trying to represent that. The players, and the flag bearers.

"What if we go out there and dominate (at Ole Miss, Sept. 3) and people start seeing us? And they put us on the map, and we're on ESPN. And they start wondering who these kids are what are they doing with their lives, and why are they so good?

"And maybe a bunch of white boys out there go down and beat up on an SEC team, a big, physical team like (Ole Miss). If we go in there and dominate, what does that say? It starts raising questions and curiosity.

"It starts making things interesting. Getting the pot stirred, and what not. Shoot, that's fun. That's what we're out here to do. We're out here to turn heads. We're out here to change the norm of BYU and what people think of us.

"I would like to see people start fearing us. I don't know. Kind of looking at BYU as a dominant team. Especially the defense. Nobody is going to want to run against us. Start setting that respect.

"This is exciting. I can't wait to go down to Ole Miss."

    My take:

Ill advised wording, for sure, but the D-News sanitizing his remarks is revealing, if not surprising. It's not in BYU's or The Church's best PR interests to have his uncensored remarks publicized via The Church's media.

Sports, religion & marketing can be a very dangerous mixture.

Thanks for your commentary on this. I woke up this morning wondering who would be the first to expose the racism Sorenson was projecting. And as a white male I am offended that he would infer that it would be some huge accomplishment for a group of predominantly white football players to win a football game. It pisses me off to no end.

As far as the dnews is concerned, I think they were just protecting their love group, the white male. They know they can't upset the foundation.

I really like your thoughts on here usually, but it continually amazes me how Ute fans parse the words of 20 yr old kids at a religious university.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

LOL! BYU really is able to get into their minds.

Saying that, I thought it wasn't the most fortunate statement. Sorenson is going to be a really good college football player and perhaps he will one day be Jimmerlike when he is interviewed. Today, he is not quite there in either regard.

However, I am likely to find enormous entertainment in watching folks like Ma'ake who have found their "pearl of great price" in comments such as this!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

He's from Southern California. LDS people from that area seem apt to say silly things.

His sweeping generalizations and obvious racism are ill advised.

Fortunately, people from Mississippi can't read, so I think this whole thing will blow over.

I'll fight you right now. I don't even care that your comment was meant for a certain father of dizygotic triplets. Mess with one bean and you fight the whole burrito.

I really don't care about his comments specifically but being an LDS Ute fan it always gets under my skin to hear BYU Football refered to as a missionary tool. It is sports not missionary work, please don't confuse the two. Rant over.

I can see how that would bother an Active LDS Ute Fan.

as a non alum BYU fan I totally agree.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Whatever. Lots of people have been known to the join the church in hopes of getting better season tickets.

I don't want to fight you or Triple Dad. I was really only trying to offend LA Ute. I knew there would be some collateral damage, but that's the choice I made.
