    Poppin the question

So, I'm driving to Los Angeles tomorrow to talk to my girlfriend's parentals. They don't like me much. They think I inflate my forty time. Plus they wonder why I pray to Drew Phillips.

No, really though, they've never liked me. And I recently broke up with her before realizing that marriage didn't sound all that bad, so they like me now even less.

    Any tips?

Probably best not to surprise them. Assuming the girl is over 18, there's really only one thing the parents can say. Better to give them the chance to say what they ought to say rather than react naturally.

Find the nicest bottle of wine you can afford, then find something slightly more expensive, buy it and bring it as a gift for her parents. Nothing shows class like an expensive bottle of wine and it is important to show them the type of lifestyle their daughter would be missing out on to help persuade their decision.

Does this fly with Mormon parents?

              Right. Check.

BTW, I've changed my mind on 9/11. You guys convinced me. I still don't trust the federal government as far as I can throw them but at least now I can stop using a ill-advised premise to make that point. I believe that the planes were plenty sufficient to bring down those buildings, as suggested.

I told you I could be taught.

                Welcome back, brother.

Does your gf know you're getting married? Have you asked her yet?

Are you planning on asking for permission, or are you just informing the parents about your plans?

Yeah, I've never heard "popping the question" used in reference to the potential in-laws before. TKD, just make sure the floor is clean before you get down on one knee.

She knows. She wouldn't have taken me back otherwise

I'm getting the ring when I get paid, which is supposed to be July 1st but we'll see. So no, I haven't "officially" asked her yet.

No, I'm not asking for permission. She already told them what was up. I'm just going down as a sign of respect; maybe give them a chance to say what's on their minds, try to change my mind, whatever. I think they deserve the chance to do that now if they so choose.

I meant I would be popping the question soon, and thus, was going to talk to her parents beforehand. So nitpicky, babs. Is it true you're really hot in real life?

But I thought she already knew? So you're not really popping the question, and you're not asking for the parents' permission.... What are you doing again? You've already them (and they don't like you). I'm confused.

Are you going to specifically raise the issue and ask for comment? That seems odd, since you're not going to listen if they forbid you from marrying their daughter.

I am popping the question. Just not on this trip. I'm taking this trip because I'm popping the question soon, and I know her dad wants the customary sit down with me. He specifically asked her if I was going to do that. He seemed fine with a phone call, but it seemed a little more respectful to up the stakes and drive out there myself. I figured I'd pick them up some Johnny Lingo type gifts on the way out too. I suppose it couldn't hurt.

It sounds like they are an old-school family and the gesture would be appreciated if not by the daughter, then certainly by the father and maybe the mother as well. Since you are already not their favorite selection for a SIL, this gesture probably isn't a bad idea. If they take the opportunity to tell you to your face that they are not happy about the union, then nothing has really changed, but if you can mend the relationship a bit it might make the next 30-40 years of your life (I am a positive person) a bit more enjoyable.

I would keep it simple. Tell them that you love their daughter more than anything in the world and you are planning to ask her to marry you. Don't ask for their blessing because they might not give it. Once you tell them how you feel about their daughter and what your plans are (be very brief) then shut up and wait for their response and then listen to what they have to say. Don't try and alleviate their concerns just stick to the script of how much you love and admire their daughter. They love their daughter too and at least you guys can have THAT in common even if they hate the very sight of you.

Have you passed gas in front of the soon to be Mrs. Rexkwondave? Could be a deal breaker.
