  • Top 10 LDS "Intellectuals"

    http://www.deseretnews.com/top/168/1...-Ericksen.html

    A few things I noticed:

They put "intellectuals" in quotation marks. Seems odd.

The Deseret News is really going downhill. This list is pretty bizarre, but at least they put Sterling McMurrin and BH Roberts in it. I love Lowell Bennion, but he was not an intellectual -- just an incredibly good person.

So was Joseph Smith an uneducated farm boy or was he an "intellectual"? I thought his lack of education/sophistication was part of the argument for the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.

Joseph Smith's inclusion is indeed odd.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Just be glad it wasn't "pseudo-intellectuals".

They all got ex'd in the 90s.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

A few of these people would probably count.

People like Clayton Christensen and maybe somebody like Nate Oman of the younger generation are pretty darn intellectual.

That list would be better if they took out this one.

Yeah, I think it defeats the purpose of the website for them to really put any current BYU professors on the site and Dan Peterson is not one of my favorites.

I mean a BYU professor loses his job if he loses his testimony. That kind of conflict of interest should be taken into account and should probably be explicitly stated.

Thanks for that Mormon Scholars link. The Armand Mauss essay was fantastic.

This guy is great, too. I didn't really read his testimony, but the haircut speaks for itself. We need more with his style.

Yeah, I really like what he wrote and that was one of the first ones I read. It starts out awesome with his backhanded dig at people in his ward who "know" everything when they bear testimony. And then this line is good (I was going to post above that Joseph Smith was a genius, but not an intellectual).

Such a revered academic intellectual as Harold Bloom attributes Joseph’s accomplishments, including the Book of Mormon, to “genius.” To me, that’s as close as a secular explanation can come to “divine origin,” to which I would testify.

Here's another good one. Just seems very smart and sincere and he's not claiming to know too much:

He was one of my favorite professors at BYU:

What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.
