  • Great Apostates

These are some of my favorite apostates in history (in no particular order):

    The historical Jesus

    Paul of Tarsus

    Dostoevky

    Tolstoy

The Founding Fathers of the United States

    Spinoza

    David Hume

    Adam Smith

    Joseph Smith

    Nietzche

    For starters.

    EDIT: add Darwin. Jinx woot.

When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I am not a big fan of his. (You notice I didn't put down Marx or Engles either.) He unintentionally hastened great things, by breaking the "Catholic" hammerlock on Europe (I put Clatholic in quotes beacuse the term really didn't mean much until Luther). But he was an enemy of the Renaissance, generally wanted to take us back to medieval times. His religious progeny including Mormons like to cherry pick indulgences as what motivated him. But that was a small part of it. He opposed the return to Classical tastes and ethos that Christianity was taking, and, of course, was a forerunner of the Enlightenment.

In some ways Henry VIII > Luther.

So by great you mean "ones I like"? Luther was a pretty unpleasant guy, but as apostates go he was pretty important.
                        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

                            True. Two more like that:

                            Constantine the Great

                            Clovis
