Not all suicides are created equal, and while certain suicides certainly could be classifed as a sin, I wouldn't be willing to paint a very broad brush on this subject.

Oh I see... suicide's ok. I never thought of that before. Thanks for freeing my mind.Originally posted by Babs View PostWell gee, in that case I guess it's settled."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

Well I know it's the Great Hope at every lds suicide funeral that the person was in such a state that he's not accountable, and it's insensitive to suggest otherwise.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostNot all suicides are created equal, and while certain suicides certainly could be classifed as a sin, I wouldn't be willing to paint a very broad brush on this subject."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'm not sure if the genesis of this thread assumed an LDS point-of-view.Originally posted by Commando View Postno I didn't ask if it was a sin. That is a well documented given in this conversation if you're lds.
I've heard stories - I know a woman who was ex'd for attempting suicide 25 or 30 years ago - but have never read or come across any documentation about the sinfulness of suicide. I always kind of figured it was a Catholic-type appropriation.
Can you show me these well-documented sources?"More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

so you personally know a woman who was exed for attempting suicide but you're not sure if the Church is for or against?"I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

Well, we all know that it's socially acceptable to suggest how and why someone is a sinner, so why should suicide be any different?Originally posted by Commando View PostWell I know it's the Great Hope at every lds suicide funeral that the person was in such a state that he's not accountable, and it's insensitive to suggest otherwise.

Why are you answering my question with a question?Originally posted by Commando View Postso you personally know a woman who was exed for attempting suicide but you're not sure if the Church is for or against?
I'm pretty sure the church is against suicide. I think pretty much everyone is against suicide, certain circumstances aside. That's like being against abuse and intolerance. Not exactly a doctrinal stand. but from where come the notion of "sin"? I think it's a cultural thing and has no basis in LDS scripture or doctrine. I'd be willing to revise my position if you could show me documentation.
I think it was wrong to excommunicate the lady I know. She was already feeling horrible about her life. She tried to end it with an overdose. This was in the late 70s or early 80s. She has since been rebaptized (in about '98 or '99). Yet, many bishops, leaders, etc. with whom I've spoken in more recent times assure me that they are quite hesitant to take disciplinary action against a suicide survivor as someone who is obviously under mental duress, and possible mental illness. (obviously you can't discipline the dead)
Hence my question: from my anecdotal experiences, it seems that there is no clear-cut mandate to excommunicate attempted suicides, nor is there a doctrine to my knowledge that condemns such to hell (or similar). Since you claim it's so well documented, can you show them to me? Is it in the Ensign? Journal of Discourses? Maybe the Handbook they give bishops?
Or do you just have a bunch of stories like I do?Last edited by Solon; 03-04-2009, 01:17 PM."More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

It's not a sin to go commando, unless your zipper breaks.Originally posted by Babs View PostIs it also a sin to be commando?
The Schwarzenegger movie Commando, on the other hand, was a sin."More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."
