I will have to dig around to see what the basis was for his request for asylum from El Salvador. The Ron Mortensen quote is interesting in that it seems odd to hear a politician and a member criticize the Church publicly. It's also odd to see the Church be so accommodating about immigration when they are often inflexible about other civil matters.

The former bishop in the other ward that meets in our building was deported last year. In this case it was to Canada. Dude was chiropractor and pretty much just had to leave his practice and house. I saw him in halls in church yesterday. he just got his visa and is back.

Our first counselor almost got deported last year as well. He's canadian. We kept kidding him about it until he told us it was a very serious matter. His sister, who came over at the same time about 50 years ago, was actually deported for a few weeks until she could come up with documentation.

He fought for the US in Vietnam, and was a postman for 20 years. I guess that doesn't mean anything if you dont have documentation.

Anyways he made it, but it was a few anxious months for him.

Look, I'm probably a lot more hardlined on immigration than most here. I definitely think we need to get a much better handle on who is here, etc.

However, I have always believed that if you served in the U.S. armed forces, let alone FOUGHT in a war, you should be fastracked to immediate citizenship

There are laws on the books that allow for this right now. Problem is that people don't receive brochures from the gov't giving step by step instructions on how to apply, and they don't hire attorneys often until it's too late.

Funny how a civil matter can land you in jail for months on end with no 6th amendment rights applicable. THAT's what's messed up about immigration law.

No, he probably just got a notice saying his time was up, left, reapplied for the visa, and came back in. If you're deported, you're not getting a visa to come back.

Asylum is near impossible to obtain right now. Most people applying from El Salvador try to say they're afraid of the gangs and how they tried to get them to join, but that isn't one of the available grounds, and the claim always fails.

No, while it's against federal law, it's not considered a crime in immigration court, which is a civil proceeding. - it's considered to be an "immigration infraction" i.e. unlawful presence, or entry without inspection, which are grounds for removal.
