Why do you or yours hate Mother's Day

If you meant my ward, I think by far more women didn't like that than liked it. Wife said many women were trying to shift the discussion to Mother's Day topic in RS and seemed to be upset they dropped it all.

No, I'm sure it would go fine. I'm sure the women that wanted this change would understand the men were victims in this, and they were likely self loathing behind all the smiles while they ate their chocolates and enjoyed lessons telling them how great they were.

Three Bishops ago, I was in Ward Council and the Bishop told us all that he's learned that if you hand out something for Mother's Day, there are always people who will complain. And if you don't hand out something for Mother's Day, there will also always be people who complain. So - he'd decided that he'd rather have people complain while he saved money and any emotional energy it took to figure out what the right "gift" was, and we wouldn't be giving anything out to mothers.

That was nearly 15 years ago, I think, and the following two Bishops have decided that with the precedent he set, there was no reason to change things. So we've done no gifts, flowers, treats, etc. The Primary has all of the kids make some cutesy gift for their mother - which is a nice touch. And often they'll have the kids go sing a song during the last few minutes of Relief Society. But that's it.

Many years the talks in Sacrament Meeting aren't Mom specific either - though usually there is something along the lines of the role of women.

All the women meet in the RS room for basically a continental breakfast if fruit salad, muffins, croissants and chocolates. Men get pies on father's day. The only weird thing is they invited the laurels to be a part of it. That was agreed upon in ward council for some reason between the RS and YW presidents. I chimed in fine, do what you want, but priests aren't coming into our meeting to eat pie.

I wouldn't call the gift giving "aggressive." I would probably call the gift giving "insistent." I also don't really think it is "bad" or "bizarre."

It may be a little bizarre. But it comes from a good place. Interstingly, a place of inclusion. You just can't make everyone happy, I guess.

So - what do other churches do? What does the Catholic church or other Christian churches do? What do the Jewish or Muslim congregations do? I'm not sure I believe that the LDS church is the only religious organization in the world - or at least in the US - that gives some small gift (usually a small flower/plant or a treat) to women on Mother's Day.

But I am pretty ethnocentric in this, I guess. Just having a hard time thinking that only Mormons care about Mother's Day.

Mormons aren't the only ones, its just that they are so AGGRESSIVE.
