But the caution is getting a substitute. I didn't need a substitute very often (2-4 times per year) but I've lived in wards where primary has been unpopular because of a large primary in a small ward (few teachers). The primary presidency won't find substitutes and many (most?) parents will not volunteer. Once I had to infrom a PP that I would be out of town and had called almost everyone in the ward to sub but had been turned down. That's the only part of primary I didn't like and it really soured my attitude towards my fellow ward members. So much so, that I've gone "SoonerCoug" on my old ward. I felt like swearing at the next time someone told me that they couldn't possibly substitute for me because they were a teacher's quorum advisor or 3rd counselor in the relief society.

For reference: This is a ward where I was also Den leader for two years (in addition to teaching the same kids in primary) for 14 Wolves...by myself. Everyone else had turned them down and I didn't have an 8-year old boy at the time. That's why I had this calling for two years because the next year I had a son that was Wolf age.
We have the exact same situation in our current ward. It's really disappointing to me that people come every week and won't help. Particularly parents who send their kids to primary but won't fill in when needed.

While out of town I got a call from this mother telling me the PP said she couldn't sub for me since it had to be either two male teachers, a man/wife married couple, or a woman teacher (I assume two women would have been fine) and that a male/female team couldn't teach if they aren't married .
That's how it works. It's your fault for not telling the other guy you were team teaching with that he also had the day off as your substitute could have taught by herself (but not with the other guy).

I did find one exception though, I was subbing for an extended stretch with my wife for another couple. The wife stayed in Utah with the kids and the husband was supposed to arrive back in town. So this week I was counting on him being back in primary to team teach with me. More accurately, my wife was counting on him being back because she skipped out after Sacrament to finish cooking a family dinner as my folks were in town. Well the guy did the predictable thing and skipped church with his family away. Just when the PP was making the rounds, my Mom found my classroom because she didn't feel like going to RS without my wife and wanted more grandma time with her granddaughter. So she sat in and we taught primary together.

You're lucky you didn't get caught. You have to be MARRIED to the woman if for a man/woman team.

That's pretty much how CUF works. This thread may or may not get back to sleepovers at some point.

Sleepover whining flamed out, but it could resurface, so stand by.

              • we had our first invite to a sleepover this past weekend for our seven year old. It was a Saturday to Sunday proposal and we had to be at church in the morning so we declined.

actually we really like this family and had it been for Friday then we likely would have let her go. We proposed a late night play date instead but that didn't work out.

It's nice to find families like that. We've had a no-Sunday sleepover policy, which we bend on occasion.

                              Hire a babysitter.

One of the excuses I was told why a sister couldn't possibly substitute for her son's primary class was that 2nd and 3rd hours of church were "her time". She deserved to have 2nd hour spent with her cherished husband in GD class and 3rd hour spent in RS with her fellow sisters...without her kids. I just replied that her son needs a primary teacher a couple of Sundays from now; either you're willing to help out or you're not...sounds like your not. I then got a call back from her angry husband informing me that it was my duty and responsibilty to care for their child for those two hours of church. My reply to him was that I didn't work for him - I'm a volunteer primary teacher not his personal employee. If he wanted a babysitter for Sunday, he should hire one.

Apologies for yet another detour from the merits and dangers of sleepovers.

My wife used to work in the nursery and she would get this excuse occasionally when we were looking for a sub. One time she needed an assistant (I filled in most weeks) but the bishop went weeks without calling someone. When she asked him about it, he said "I am sorry, but I am trying. I have asked about ten people and they all turned me down."
