That just makes me wonder what people's understanding of the honor code is.

If the press is saying that the honor code means no sex, no alcohol, no coffee, no tea, no swearing, no immodest dress, and shave - well, I think a lot of people think they could do that.

But if you add in the nuance that is mentioned above - adding in thoughts, respect, etc. - I think that changes things quite a bit.

No one is perfect. But there are some things that can be done perfectly. I didn't do anything in college that would've gotten me to a visit with an honor code official. That doesn't mean that I didn't skip a day shaving once or twice or that I never cussed under my breath.

The poll question is similar to "Have you ever broken the law?" "Yes" answers would include jaywalking\ and genocide.

I got busted for having hair that occasionally drifted over my ears, and I'm certain I swore once, probably during Wayne Howard's game of redemption in 1978. Although many of us like to fancy ourselves as rebels, I suspect the majority of HC violations being claimed here are the equivalent of lathering, rinsing, and NOT repeating.

I regularly had a full beard, I violated other facets of the grooming standard regularly (long hair, dyed hair, no hair), and I stayed at my girlfriend's apartment past the allotted time now and again, even falling asleep there one time. Also, I hosted a couple of mixed gender sleepovers at my parents' place.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Aside from not-shaving and having an afro for half my time at the Y, I pretty much followed the Honor Code. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I did violate the Honor Code when I played wingman for my buddy at the Circle Lounge in SLC. I later learned that it was a violation of the HC to even be present at a nightclub where alcohol is served.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

In all seriousness, except for an unshaven day or two, I kept the HC while at BYU.
So then no, you did not keep the Honor Code.

Aside from the things that I did that violated the Honor Code, I did keep the Honor Code.

there is a huge difference between "could" you vs "would" you.

Ask the question if you think BYU's honor code makes better people than you are. That would be an interesting result.

Interestingly I played music at most of the clubs and dive bars along the Wasatch front and Park City with the full knolwedge of my BYU Bishop. I didn't commit WoW violations but witnessed many BYU students/athletes doing so. I now feel guilty for not reporting them.

I was about to give up on explaining the nuance. Thank you for saving me.

Not really, you should just answer the poll question honestly, without the self justification.

Everybody did. Even my girlfriend's roommate who liked to interrupt our make-out sessions at 12:01. That nobody keeps it is what makes it such a joke.

Oh for heaven's sake, I understood the question. Get a sense of humor already.
