  • For the Strength of the Youth - 1965

A friend of mine found this gem:

    http://www.barncow.com/mormon/youth-1965.html

I especially liked this quote from the section on dancing:

Members of the Church should be good dancers and not contortionists. Extreme body movements should be avoided, and emphasis should be placed more on styling and footwork.
I suppose even then they couldn't just come right out and say "Don't dance like negroes."
"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
"It's no secret that the great American pastime is no longer baseball. Now it's sanctimony." -- Guy Periwinkle, The Nix.

ha ha! I've read that too. Wouldn't the Brethren be horrified at where dancing has gone over the past 45 years??

I don't know. Those guys demonstrate some serious styling and footwork.

          Some real winners in there.

Few girls or women ever look good in backless or strapless dresses. Such styles often make the figure look ungainly and large, or they show the bony structures of the body.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Maybe they were talking about not dancing like hippies.

Also, "knee knockers?" I think many of the women in my current ward are currently sporting knee knockers....

Your wife doesn't dress up to go grocery shopping? Weird.

Yeah, but would you eat a doughnut that had some dog crap on it?

And my wife wonders why I look at the current version with a skeptical eye and refuse to acknowledge that it is doctrine.

I'm sure there will be changes, but the new version seems more broad based without as many clear examples of does and don'ts. I find the current FSY quite helpful in interviewing youth--we read a section together and talk about what challenges they are or are not having in relation to it.
