Word I have never heard used in GD before yesterday.

    Sperm.
One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

Yes, we had an older brother explaining his version of immaculate conception/artifical insemination.

There is nothing that disgusts me more than older people talking about sperms, eggs and birth control.

We had some similar stuff. He said something about "In the one case the recipient was filled with the holy ghost and in the other she was filled with ..." Implying sperm I wasn't close enough to know if he actually said sperm. Why is there such a preoccupation with this?

Yeah, we had some odd comments as well.

What is the official doctrine on this (no jokes please)? I know that some early church leaders such as BY made some pretty provocative statements as to what happened but I always viewed them as part of the "speculative theology" that was so common at the time. I also seem to recall that the current position is more of a "we don't know exactly what happened" approach. Anyone know more about this?

This is my understanding. I would also be interested if someone has more information than this.

I think the official doctrine is that Mary was the mother of Jesus and was a virgin at the time of his birth. God was the literal father of Jesus' body here on earth. We don't know how conception occurred. I always wondered at the doctrine that God had intercourse with Mary. It doesn't make sense because if God had a body and had intercourse, Mary would not be a virgin. Anyway, I think the official position is that we don't know what actually happened but we do know the result which is that Jesus was the literal son of God and Mary.

Stepping away from a theological perspective, I have always thought the tendency of some early Utah church leaders to explain this doctrine in such real and even sensual terms seemed, to me, to reflect their practical and domineering spirit. By describing Christ’s conception and birth in such a way the church lowered God to us, brought him into corporeal form and made Him one of us, and us just like Him. God was knowable, He was comprehensible, He was not a mystery. He worked just like we do. With this mind set it is easier to conquer the wilderness, to brave the plains, to scale the mountains, and to build something out of a sage brush and cricket-strewn nothingness. These were very practical and direct people. This explanation, even if not doctrine, suited them.
                      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

                              Official doctrinal statement:
Jesus Christ is the Son of Elohim both as spiritual and bodily offspring; that is to say, Elohim is literally the Father of the spirit of Jesus Christ and also of the body in which Jesus Christ performed His mission in the flesh
                              This is from:
                              THE FATHER AND THE SON
A Doctrinal Exposition by The First Presidency and The Twelve (1926)

There are much more explicit statements of the claim, including in recent church manuals published by the church. But nothing with doctrinal weight. Though when you combine all the statements by prophets and church publications, you get about as close as you can to doctrine.
