My first experience that I can remember with the manipulation pattern on my mission was in my first district, when my district leader wanted us all to memorize the discussions (in french). During a district meeting, he gave a guilt-inducing speech on memorizing them and then asked each of us individually to commit to memorizing them by a certain date. When he got to me, I said "no".
Other than that, I can't really remember any times where I really felt like I was being publicly manipulated to do something in the church. On Sunday, in EQ, our new gung ho counselor gave an enthusiastic lecture on setting goals for missionary work, committing with God to do certain things to get that goal, and promising that the goal will be accomplished. It was bad enough that the lesson was just pure bunk, but at the end, he asked each of us to raise our hands and commit to praying daily for missionary opportunities. I didn't raise my hand.
What are your stories with the manipulation pattern? Bonus points if you were the manipulator!
