I think they cracked down on special fasts. I remember several for moisture growing up. on days other than the traditional fast sunday. But now are told monthly fast is sufficent.

Missionaries in fact are not to do more than monthly fast. I like testimony meeting myself. Can be interesting. I have seen messages to have special fasts for individuals. One was to heal someone. Thing is what if it is not the willl of the Lord to heal someone? And the scripture that says appointed to die, What about Agency of other people. Fasting serves no purpose when it cannot take away agency. Interesting handbook specifically says not to ask members of your home ward for special fasts for investigators.

A few years ago Missionaries did a 40 day fast were a diffrent person fasted for 40 consecutive days. I tried to avoid signing up but calender sent back to me. I forgot about it but got a call thanking me for fasting.

Gerald Lund said some things are inappropriate like the 40 day fast in his book on revelation called hearing the voice of the lord.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Didn't read any of the posts above, but consider changing the lesson into a lesson on sacrifice...you could go through OT-style sacrifice then transition to Christ's sacrifice, then talk about personal sacrifices that we make (including fasting). The best way to wiggle around the topic of fasting may be to say "instead of focusing on fasting, I'd like to focus on the underlying principle--sacrifice" or something like that.
