  • "Heavenly Father"

I detest the phrase "Heavenly Father". I think it reflects a coarse view of the cosmos. When BKP said, "Why would a loving Heavenly Father do that?" I bristled at least twice over.

There is the obvious sexism and paternalism. I also prefer my God transcenent of gender or human characteristics. As Xenophanes famously noted, "But if cattle and horses and lions had hands or could paint with their hands and create works such as men do, horses like horses and cattle like cattle also would depict the gods' shapes and make their bodies of such a sort as the form they themselves have." Fathers are invariably so flawed! Finally, Christianity is the religion of the Son.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I, for one, am encouraged to learn that you listened to/watched conference. There is hope for you yet!

I've read President Packer's talk over several times now, and the phrase to which you refer simply isn't there. I believe you are mistaken.

Fixed: "why would a loving general Zod do that?"

This provides a better view of the cosmos, as well as planet krypton.

If there is no God, then preference of characteristics is a moot point.
If there is a God, He doesn't care what you prefer his characteristics to be.

Yet we also believe in a Heavenly Mother, granted we don't pray to her but we are still that much more progressive than many other Christian religions.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Not only that, but we also preach that women can become Gods.

Fixed. I'm sure there's a difference and I'm sure SU will explain how it is demeaning to women.

which is more than SU has ever done for women.

While we believe in a Heavenly Mother, that doesn't really resolve SU's issue here. Some would contend that the belief is little more than lip service, as any actual discussion of Heavenly Mother is stifled by the patriarchal powers of the church and can even result in church discipline. Just ask Paul and Margaret Toscano.

Nice. That involved a little more than a "discussion".

Do you know anyone that has formulated well developed opinions about Heavenly Mother, what her place is in the cosmos, and why we don't talk about her? If so, do they share them with others openly in church or other venues? I don't know anyone, nor have I heard of anyone who fits into that category and hasn't faced church discipline.

Where they don't incorrectly pass off anything as doctrine or advocate the modification of church doctrine and/or practices?
