Actually, according to the quote, it is the responsibility of every young man to PREPARE to serve a mission, and missionary service (not necessarily a mission) is a religious/priesthood duty.

This is subtly different than how you describe it, and the distinction is probably intentional.

RObin and I rarely see eye to eye on religious issues. Very rarely. But before reading his post here I had the same thought Robin did. Missionary work (not serving a FT mission) is a duty of all priesthood holders and always has been. I don't think his words went as far as you are taking it, PU, but I didn't hear it.

I'm more concerned that he said retired couples should also serve missions. That one applies to me in the not too distant future.

I already put in my two years, but my wife didn't. I guess I have another decade or so to convince myself that I want to go on another mission.

I'm sure Robin was also taking into account the admonitions in recent years to hold a temple recommend even if you don't live close to a temple. Robin was recognizing that TSM was again referring to the importance of living to certain standards and the value of preparation for eternal goals even when mortal goals are sometimes not achieved.
