  • Things that make the BOM good.

I was just contemplating the BOM. (I'm about to go home teaching.) I was trying really hard to come up with some good things to say about it, and I think I have a few.

I think the reason the BOM is so inspiring to people is that it tells many stories of redemption, and these are stories that people can identify with. It also tells dramatic war stories that provide some entertainment value. Stories about chopping off arms are memorable for kids, etc. I knew lots of Ammons in elementary school.

      I agree with those, SC.

We had Branch Conference this past Sunday and the BP challenged us all to read the BoM so we started again as a family (we were up through Alma already and had to start over again). We read 1 Nephi 2 last night and I really liked this verse:

16 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young, nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires to know of the mysteries of God, wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord; and behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father; wherefore, I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers.
The bolded part spoke to me, in part because I can relate, but also because it provides hope in a real sense that God cares and will "visit" us when we "cry unto" Him.

We also talked a little about Laman and Lemuel. I had a GD instructor who once asked the class to answer honestly who they thought they were most like, Laman and Lemuel or Nephi. We had a fun discussion on that last night as well.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I think the BOM has a lot of good doctrine about grace and repentance.

2 Nephi 2 is great and I have always loved Nephi's psalm. Those were the two that I shared for home teaching this month.

Alma chapter 5 is one of the greatest sermons ever preached

Inactive family sent us to the wrong address (scary ghetto apartment building) at 9 PM. I'm suspicious that we were intentionally misdirected. Didn't get to share my inspiring thoughts with them. Glad I didn't get robbed. God was looking out for me.
