I raised my hand to comment but the teacher moved on. I was going to counter the point by saying that it's not always that black and white and then maybe bring up MMM if I was shot down. Probably a good thin they moved on.
Indeed. I used to pounce all over stuff like that, but have learnt my lesson (it helps that I'm the GD teacher and I rarely attend EQ).

He shared his testimony and expressed gratitude for the branch president who took him under his wing after he was baptized and helped him grow in the gospel. Yesterday he helped bury this branch president. He then went on to express gratitude to our former bishop who is his best friend now. In describing his friendship and fondness he said that he hopes he goes before his dear friend because he cannot go through the loss he felt yesterday again. It was really touching.
That was touching (and it's nice to get a positive vibe in this thread every now and again). OOC, however, why was it worth noting he is black? Because he's in the South, which may make it even more difficult to be Mormon?

I think it's just tougher to be Mormon and black.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Yes. I think it adds a dimension to the friendship of the Branch President who befriended him and brought him along in the Gospel. Especially considering he joined not long after the priesthood ban was lifted. This area too is still very much the south at times.

Also, he's the only member in his family. His wife has never joined and remains a staunch baptist.

        • I learned in priesthood that the caretaker of the grounds of the sacred grove is a non LDS arborist and that this man has said he can tell something very special happened there.

Happiness Comes From Choosing the Right
            I Can Choose the Right
I Choose to Follow Jesus Christ

            Today's lesson:

            I Can Make Right Choices

I can appreciate a theme but we are only one month into the year and it seems like this topic has been beaten to death.

Do you ever wander of the reservation and teach something other than the lesson in the manual?
I've never taught Primerica, but I did just finish a stint teaching Primary. I certainly used non manual materials.

            • What seemed like a very nice lady from our ward spoke about how her son had gone to the temple and prayed about marrying a girl he had dated for almost 2 years after his mission. His mom knew he had gone to pray about this and after he drove back from Portland he went and told his mom that he knew he should marry this girl.

Then a couple weeks later and "thankfully before he proposed" Pres. Hinckley commanded that women only wear one earring. Her son told the girl that day after conference that she should immediately remove her second earring. She said she wasn't going to and he told her that she needed to be like Nephi and follow the commandments of God with urgency. The harlot refused to follow the commandment and less than a month later they had broken up.

She then concluded her talk by sharing a testimony that we should trust the holy ghost gives us answers to our prayers, and trust that those answers are from God.

Would he like to know more?

                    • I learned at my personal worship service today that the brunch special at High Cotton on Bay St. in Charleston is an incredible Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, served with fried green tomatoes rather than toast/english muffin. I also learned that High Cotton's house-made sausage and cheese grits are divine.

Wow, that sounds awesome. Spiritual, even.

                            • I don't know if this belongs here, but I don't know where else it would go, and it doesn't deserve its own thread.

My bishop does something that I really like. He never makes the Priests bless the sacrament more than twice. Today one of the Priests was struggling on the prayer for the water. He said "body" instead of blood, caught it himself (or maybe was nudged by the Priest next to him) and started over. After the restart, he made a couple of mistakes, and at the end the bishop gave him the sign to do it again. The next time through was his worst yet, with two or three mistakes, including a repeat of the fairly obvious "body" instead of "blood". Nevertheless, at the end, the bishop gave him the thumbs up, and we all proceeded to drink damnation to our souls, if I interpret the scriptures correctly.

I have actually had a bishop previously who had this same policy, but he was one of those laid-back liberal bishops who probably grew a beard as soon as he was released. My current bishop is very conservative and strict. There are several points on which I disagree with him on (one of which I will probably be sharing soon), but he has a good heart and is a much better bishop than I would be (although in all humility I think I am a much better choir director than I think he would be).

Our bishop has this policy as well. The priests never say the prayer more than twice even if they massacre it the second time.
