yes, the whole family (mother, father, two small children), and no, they didn't go to chilis. they waited in the foyer until sacrament meeting was over and then went to Sunday school.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

We had excellent talks from a Korean couple. He talked about being drafted after serving a mission. Being just off his mission, I guess he was very diligent in his draftee training and was bumped up to the Black Berets (special forces). It was definitely not something he wanted to do; lots of physically and emotionally demanding training, as well as very dangerous assignments. His salary at the time was $2 per day as a draftee. Being in the Black Berets got him another $2 in danger pay.

Anyway, he said that it was not at all fun so he turned to his scriptures and prayer to help him through. Very inspirational. Even Noah listened. He credited that time and experience with helping him to change his outlook on life and take on a more positive approach.

Generally this is what we get each week. Personal stories of how The Gospel works to make people's lives better. Occasionally someone will say something nutty (the risks of a lay ministry) and I make sure I point that out to my kids at Sunday dinner. But normally, people sharing inspirational teachings and experiences.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

A nutty talk or testimony is also a rarity in our ward.

Yeah, the nutty stuff is fairly rare in my ward too. But it does keep things interesting.

In the spirit of the last few posts I will go ahead and humblebrag that my wife gave an outstanding talk today about being sensitive to one another's needs and looking for opportunities to serve. I was proud of her.

Delivered in a very calm, matter-of-fact manner. Maybe it's just me, but I found his message very comforting.

Ward conference here. First time I've witnessed someone oppose the bishopric and stake leadership by the "uplifted hand." He's a cool guy, and always has some meaty comments in GD.

A few weeks back we had a former merchant marine give a very detailed explanation of the Jaredite barges and how they worked. Very detailed. Among other things, he noted that the barges had two air holes, one where the new air came in and the other where the old air went out. He explained that the animals were kept near the "out" hole. That made sense.

I started thinking,"I bet Laman and Lemuel put their animals near the "in" hole just to spite Nephi." but then quickly realized, wrong ocean crossing dope!

                  • Today I learned that waiting out the sacrament in the foyer and poaching the Deacon's benches is much better than sitting on the gym foldout chairs (this lesson wasn't given in a talk, but rather a personal discovery).

I can support this finding. I scrapped the gym chairs after 45 minutes, and went to the padded ones in the YW room. You could still hear.

                      • Today we had Ward Conference. Our stake president spoke to the Priesthood and some of it was about our last Stake Conference, for which Elder Samuelson was the visiting authority. The stake president related some cool experiences he had with him like Pres. joining his family for their scripture study and also showing genuine interest in the stake president's kids.

My stake president asked Pres. Samuelson what his two biggest concerns were at BYU. The answer: 1. fatal auto accidents involving students driving home for Thanksgiving or Christmas, and 2. the fact that DT was not structurally sound and could collapse in an earthquake.

I though it was interesting that of all the things that a GA and President of a University could worry about, that's what he mentioned. Anyway, the stake president painted a picture of Pres. Samuelson as a dedicated, talented, and caring individual.

I got the feeling that my SP doesn't care about BYU athletics too much and probably never raised the issue with Pres. Samuelson, so I didn't ask.
