"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I'm sorry, but that is just awesome. Mormonism as Spectacle!

Do you mean "Losing My Religion?"

        • I learned that even if you ditch church, err...stay home with the kids because they are sick, the EQP and his counselor will show up at your door and ask if I would be willing to be an EQ teacher.

I have felt feelings akin to "the spirit" at rock concerts, musicals, symphony, etc., as much as or even more than a typical sacrament meeting. Music can be uplifting and still affect us in a positive way. I saw the musical, 'Saving Aimee' a few weeks back and really loved it.

FTR, I am going to the Trans Siberian Orchestra concert this Saturday, and can guarantee I will feel more uplifted at that performance than I feel at church >90% of the time.

I quit caring what the church teachers thought of my music when my 9th grade seminary teacher attempted to tell us that the music of Rush was 'satanic'. Of course he also said the same garbage about Iron Maiden, among many others. My friend and I asked him to listen to "Alexander the Great", "Flight of Icarus", and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". They are in order, songs about ancient Macedonian history, Greek mythology, and classical literature (poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge). I asked him to show me where those songs were 'satanic'. He said something or other about the beats, the driving rhythm, the guitars, etc., and refused to listen to the songs.

                      • We had Stake Conference this last Sunday. We moved into a new house about a month ago and have been out of town about every weekend since. On Friday afternoon, we decided to paint the family room and spent most of the weekend finishing the whole "move in" process. Sunday morning over pancakes, my wife and I looked at each other and said, "We're not going to conference, right?" Not that we would have gone anyway, but it was amazing what the extra day of being able to tie all of our loose ends together made. It left me pretty jealous of those who get to enjoy that on a regular basis.

On a somewhat related note, my wife teaches the 6-7 year olds in primary and I substitute for her on a fairly regular basis just to give her a break with some adult time. I've discovered that you can ask these kids all sorts of questions and gain insight into their family dynamics. Given that several of the kid's parents have leadership positions in the ward, it's helped me not worry so much about our family home evening/conference watching/stake conference attending history.

Totally agree. I think there should be a GC, SC, regional conference, designated LDS Sunday "vacation" once a month. We purposely schedule our home improvement projects on GC and SC weekends.

When I taught primary for many years, I found one didn't even need to ask some kids - they would just tell me stuff going on in their family. For instance - "older sister is grounded for missing curfew and kissing boys", "older brother can't use the computer because he was looking at bad things", and "Mom and Dad are fighting about money". For a time, I had better sources in primary than my wife had in relief society.

That song is awesome. The less he knew, the easier our argument. or so we thought at the ripe age of 14.

                              • Teaching Primary is great entertainment. Previously a couple of our kids told us about their parents drinking 'good alcohol'.
