We've been studying the OT pretty intensely, so I've decided to go a different direction today, and lighten up the lesson. It's on Psalms, so after briefly reviewing psalms, we're going to play Name That Hymn. Sistren versus Brethren.
I picked 20 hymns that were inspired by Psalms, downloaded the mp3s without words, from LDS.org here: http://www.lds.org/cm/catalogalphamp...searchPhrase=T. Then, with a nifty song snipper program called MPTrim, I've edited the various hymns so we don't just guess based upon the first line of the melody. Some of them are old faves, some of rather obscure songs. I loaded them on my iPod, added portable speakers, and will play each song in class until someone raises their hand to correctly or incorrectly ID the hymn. I've a feeling that the sisters will be triumphant, but I will post either way.
I tested this out with a friend yesterday, who's been the pianist for a long time. She would listen, and then call out the hymn numbers, but was more stymied when I asked her for Hymn names. I have snippets of hymns in odd places, and I have songs like Lead Kindly Light where everyone recognizes the tune, but no one can name the Title, (due to it being played a lot as prelude music).
By the way, when preparing for this lesson, I can across this rad hymn I have never heard before, called The Wintry Day, Descending to Its Close. What a beautiful song. I can imagine, growing up in the tropics, had I learned this song as a youth, I would have thought "WhatTheFetch" but now, living in UT, I think it quite poignant.
