I think you're totally correct except for the fact that it's not bigotry. I'm hardly a bigot if I don't want to hang out with someone because they bad breath and BO. I have a rational basis for the behavior- I don't like bad smells coming from humans.

Not liking an institution because you're miles apart on social issues and on the research front is a rational basis for excluding an institution from your circle of universities. Baylor was excluded from the potential Pac 16 because it had a small market and a shitty football program- not because of its religious affiliation with the baptist church, though the religious affiliation probably didn't help.

BYU was excluded primarily because a perception of academic quackery in some fields, Sunday play and because of political positions taken by the funding institution that is 100% opposed to a very charged issue. Combine that with the fact that the church was behind the rest of the world, besides South Africa, on the race issue and it's not hard to see why Stanford and Cal- two of the most elite universities in the country- didn't want anything to do with BYU.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I like calling it bigotry because it pisses off SU.

Yeah, I know but the constant claims of religious bigotry by the CB folks is ridiculous.

Simply put, the LDS church can't do whatever wants and expect institutions and people outside of the church to be okay with all of it. Then when someone doesn't want to hang around you because of some of this stuff you pulled, you can't call them bigots, that's ridiculous. The church didn't have to exclude blacks from the priesthood until 1978, BYU doesn't have to engage in quackery and the church didn't have to dive into the fight for Prop. 8.

These all have everything to do with Utah, not BYU, getting the invite to the Pac 10. By every conceivable measure (except BCS bowl wins, of course), BYU has the superior athletic program. More fan support and more butts in seats at Pac 10 venues. But again, I certainly don't blame the Pac 10 for its decision and really don't like BYU fans calling these people religious bigots.
